|
|
Can anyone tell me what colors we used on the 80s Chevrolet Winston Cup engines? Some say they went with stock colors like Chevy Engine Orange or even black but then some swear by aluminum and even steel. What about the cylinder heads? Not sure they were using aluminum heads and blocks back then to be honest.
Thanks in advance. |

Aluminum cylinder heads were first allowed in 1985 or '86; aluminum blocks are still not allowed that I know of. :
Many teams didn't paint the block & heads for the simple reason that the intense heat generated would burn the paint off anyways. I've seen 1980's era engines with remnants of the factory paint in areas where the engine builders did not grind, drill, or weld; most often blue or black. Paint could also hide small cracks or leaks from easy detection. And independents usually didn't have money to spend on such luxuries. ( Of course some teams did paint illegal aluminum cylinder heads with magnetic paint. ) |

Everyone forgets about those bright glossy red or black steel containment bell housings that NASCAR made everyone use back then.

I recall blue bellhousings too. Must have depended on which supplier was used. Notice too the chromed stamped valve covers on Earnhardt's motor, while Junior used natural cast aluminum. Also around this time, NASCAR started allowing aftermarket distributor caps; some were red ( MSD maybe : ). |
