I like to build models in a series that have a theme or some connection to each other. Like this set of Darrell Waltrip cars from 1983. Each one has a different paint and graphics scheme. None of these models are Salvinos, they are all original Monogram Piedmont Airlines Monte Carlos. Also, none of them are full detail models. I've been building model cars now for over 60 years and I'm just no longer interested in spending days on detailing an engine for example. My main interest these days is paint and decals. No, these models have just enough parts to hold up the wheels and the body. The fact that Junior Johnson's cars were all black inside helps the illusion. There is a minimum of parts in there.
The first one is the oldest of the three. It's painted in all Testors Model Master colors, White and Chrome Yellow. I think the decals may be Monogram's but I really can't remember.
I built these next two more recently. Paint on this one is Tamiya X-2 White. The yellow is enamel from Revell (No name on the tin, just the color of the cap) Strange. Decals are by Slixx.
Finally, the "white car" . They only ran this car once, the spring race at Talladega. Paint is Tamiya again with Slixx decals.
It doesn't really show in the photos, but all three were shot with two coats of Tamiya X-22 clear gloss and waxed with Mcguire's Deep Crystal Carnauba wax.
Now then, after I finished these I remember some photos I shot of the car at Riverside Raceway in California so I went and dug those out. And what do you know, this is yet another different arrangement of graphics.
So, out to the stash, break out another kit, Power Slide decals are on their way from Mike's Decals.
I hope you all don't mind this big long post and I encourage all comments, questions, critique, and criticism. _________________ Still crazy after all these years.

VERY NICE !!! That was always one of my favorite paint schemes - even the white Talladega car. Of course I AM a life - long PEPSI drinker. The PEPSI Challenger flat-nose Monte Carlo that Darrell ran at North Wilkesboro is on my build list. Worth noting the Riverside pics were from the November, 1983 race, after the Chevrolet teams had to remove the lower portion of the front air dam. |

You're correct about that lower air dam. It's evident in all of the photos I shot that day. They also ran the "flat nose" car at Richmond. I have this photo from the "Winston Cup '83" year book.
In order to do this model I would have to buy a Salvinos Bobby Allison kit and, right now, the only place I'm seeing them is on eBay for ridiculous prices. Much more than I'm willing to pay for one. (Donations gladly accepted!)

I just saved myself $50.00! I was out in the garage going through my stash of kits. I wanted to see how many, and what variety, of Monogram Monte Carlos I had left. I noticed one of the boxes had "flat nose Monte Carlo" written on the end. So I opened it up and found this:
I got this resin nose conversion probably 25 years ago or more when I was still writing for Scale Auto. I don't remember if I bought it or it was sent to me, or who made it. But it looks pretty good, good enough anyway to complete this series. The rest of the kit is virgin. _________________ Still crazy after all these years. |

Fantastic result on these.
I don't waste energy on engine detail either. Glued in hoods for best fit-and-finish. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Paint and decals done on the "Riverside car".
Clear coats tomorrow and, hopefully, wrap this up tomorrow night or Saturday for sure. [/img] _________________ Still crazy after all these years. |

Having retired from Pepsico after a 30 year career there, those cars hold a spot dear to my heart. They did generate some interest with employees who were interested in Motorsports. I hope to get around to doing all three versions of the car some day and can only hope for results as good as yours. |

Don't know how I missed this post from over a year ago, but excellent work as always, Drew. I remember your articles in Scale Auto magazine and used them for tips, direction and inspiration. I sure miss that magazine and its website. Still try to pick up the Contest Cars edition that Fine Scale Modeling still publishes about this time every year. So far it has not shown up at Barnes and Noble. |

This is excellent work, sir.
And I feel this quote. The last 4 dioramas I built were hyper-detailed. I think I'm done with that mentality and this comment solidified it. Thanks! |
