1959...
First competitive car of Lee Roys career. A big heavy Dodge bodied modified
with a W head chevy truck engine. Lee Roy was an instant winner and drove
for Red Moore several years before moving on.
Hard headed and even harder to get along with, but loved to have his picture taken.
Lee Roy drove five different 39's in a short period of time.
With Dodge, Chevy, and Ford bodies. Always with the W head engines.
His brother Eldon followed him in the 39 cars but Red Moore never made
the transition to late model sportsmans...

This car had a few unusual features. Not racing tires at all but tall skinny ambulance
hearse tires from a company in south Florida.
Heavy but weak frame, broke several times (in half!).
Engines were built from rejected blocks supplied by a GMC dealer in Jacksonville.
And the Dodge body, only one I had ever seen. But as a kid back in the day everything
was a 32 Ford coupe, thanks to AMT. Shocked to find out all these years later its
a Dodge (or maybe a look a like Plymouth). But I do remember that cut down door...
Body, tires & wheels, rear end all from Bigdonkey.com. The front end & the white walls
are front a revell 1932 Ford kit. Frame, roll bars etc are scratch built with Evergreen plastic.
AMT W head engine.
Thanks for all the reference pictures and details from a friend in Florida. I would never had know the numbers & sponsors were outlined in light blue.
Young LeeRoy Yarbrough with a great (short) NASCAR career ahead of him.
Driver of the year and Daytona 500 winner in 1969.
