I'm not going to be on the boards this weekend, so, I want to thank all the Veterans past and present that gave for our freedoms. I know Memorial Day is about remembering those that have passed, but, we need to keep our present Vets in mind as well this weekend. I'm asking all that served past or present to please write what branch and years served in this thread. Again, THANK YOU to all of our Vets. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend gang Very Happy.

This day, Memorial day is to remember all our brother-in-arms, friends and family that have made the supreme sacrifice for this Nation and the citizens of this Nation!
As Billy a great friend and Veteran of WWII once told my son, "Please do not thank me on this day. Veterans Day is the day for us survivors and those that continue to serve."
Our thanks to all that have made that supreme sacrifice for myself and my family!

I'd like to thank a man I never met. His name is Richard P. Humenick. He was killed on Okinawa in WWII. He was my fathers friend and "seabag buddy" as they fought their way across Okinawa. On May 11th, 1945 they were together and got caught up in a fire fight. Dad took a bullet but survived but his friend and fellow Marine Richard Humenick made the ultimate sacrifice that same day. After the war the seabag found it's way back to Dad and he boxed up his buddies stuff and mailed it back to his parents in Minnesota. Dad always spoke fondly of him.

Great story Dennis, and thank you guys that posted, I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. My Dad received 2 purple hearts in Vietnam, the first was because of a fire fight between his group and a smaller Vietcong group that ambushed them. Obviously not life threatening as he got patched up and went back to his platoon after a week. The second he was in his little barrack housing cooking and a mortar went off outside the window causing shrapnel to blow and impale him, this one sent him home. He never did indulge much information about over there and kept things to himself, just little bits of info here and there. My father in law was also over there. He was on a scouting exercise with 10 other guys and heard a click, he suddenly stopped and told his brothers to scatter, he said they were all closely bunched together going down a little path. When everyone was safely away he jumped to the side, unfortunately the landmine took his right leg, but, he save 10 other lives that day. I asked him where his medals and ribbons were so I could make him a display box. His reply was" it doesn't matter where they are, the only thing that matters is that I got to come home and none of my brothers lives were lost that day". I'm guessing non vets see things differently than Vets do.
