Members,

Just read on Msn.com that James and his son were both killed in and auto accident in Georgia sometime yesterday. Sad news.

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Very sad. James was one of the most successful " Independents ", Owner / Drivers who struggled for many years as the sport grew bigger without them. He was one of a few independents to regularly make the haul out to Riverside Raceway. In 1980 he even provided his primary car for a Dan Gurney Riverside comeback. Gurney qualified the # 48 car 7th and was running top 10 late in the race when the transmission failed. Hylton himself would post several Top 10 finishes at Riverside through the years, usually in lesser equipment than those he was running with. He also provided shop space, equipment, & advice to 1973 Winston West Champion driver Jack McCoy when he ran Martinsville in Fall, 1973; McCoy would finish 5th in the race with Hylton's help.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Hylton

I did not know until the local news here in Roanoke said that James was born and raised here in the Roanoke Valley (Floyd VA ) . He graduated from William Fleming high school in Roanoke and moved away to follow racing after high school. His ex wife apparently still lives in Roanoke. I did not know this as he was never really considered a Virgina driver.
