while i don't have much more than a passing interest in this car , i know a lot of others do . my copy of the march "hemmings classic car" came in the mail today , and there's an article called "racing rarity : identy of the tucker 48 that competed in nascar is finally revealed" . i haven't read the article yet , but i've posted most of the photos below . it's prob. not on the stands yet , but you should be able to find it in a barnes & noble in a few days or so .

The article says it was gray, was #1004, and is currently on display in Japan, owned by Toyota. However....on the Tucker forum, the former owner of #1023, the car that was lost in a garage fire, says that his car was one one that had raced in NASCAR, but he was unsure what color it was at the time because it was repainted several times. _________________ http://public.fotki.com/ElCaminoBilly/

That would be great Dave! That would make an awesome addition to go with the Hudson and Chrysler 300!
My grandma's baby brother worked at Tucker. He got the job through Alex Tremulis whom he had served with during WWII.
Alex also got him a job at Ford later on. _________________ A Model, Like Life, Is What Ever You Choose To Make Of It! |

The Copala film on Tucker is great. A real tragedy even if some say Preston was as bad as those that did him in. I'd like to have seen what happened if Tucker had made it. I have the Modelhaus Tucker to scale to and it will become the racer if I can get the decals done. _________________ MK stock car build hints and many of my built models here........

Coppola's film is among my favorites - but it helps to remember that "Tucker" is as much about Francis Ford Coppola as it is Preston Tucker. He made it after his big dream of starting his own movie studio went bust; that allegory is why "Tucker" is "Mr. Smith Goes to Detroit." In the process, a lot of liberties are taken with how things actually went, and a lot of characters good and bad are simplified. The Tucker Club website has an excellent essay about the film's version of actual events, and I'll refer you to that if you're interested.
I remember seeing "Tucker" on the big screen when it came out in 1988, and fell in love with it right then and there - to this day I remember how warm and bright it looked on the big screen, how many excellent performances it had, and what a fun movie it is. It's very effective in taking you back to those times - and it's by Francis Ford Coppola, so it's a quality product anyway. The soundtrack, by Joe Jackson, is a lot of fun too, and perfect listening for the hours at the workbench while you work on your Tucker '48 model. (See? I did bring it back around to models! Do I get a cookie for that? ) |

Thank you Jodie! I know if you look there is a two part story that gives what actually was transpiring in the trial and that shows how a politician, in fact several played a part including a future IL. Governor who himself would wind up in jail!
The scope of government manipulation in the trial at the behest of some big political contributors is huge to say the least!
I like reading everything I can on Tucker and the history behind him and his attempt to live the American dream!
Now if only Moebius would decide to kit the Tucker! _________________ A Model, Like Life, Is What Ever You Choose To Make Of It! |

I've tossed it into the idea bucket.....but it is a rather narrow subject....not many variations possible....unlike the Hudson and 300 which are MANY!! _________________ MK stock car build hints and many of my built models here........

There aren't many subjects that are both desirable and that have never been done in resin, but I agree that the Tucker is probably a better candidate for resin than styrene.
I think there are a handful of '50s-'60s automotive subjects that fit the Moebius marketing plan. The '57 Olds 88, '61 Pontiac Catalina, '50 Cadillac, and '50 Studebaker all would make good subjects. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...

I've never seen that one picture above that has it on the hook, with the right rear wheel missing. It also looks like there's no tape (or paint) on the front bumper or the headlights like the shot with the trunk open. And does the lettering on the door look different?? _________________ Marty

It was probably driven to the race so the wrecker is towing it back home. The tape was probably removed at the track to prevent residue from forming. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...

having now read the article , i can venture a few guesses .
the # 12 is in a different location on each side as it was the street number of the dealership or sponsor , with the rest of the address following to the right of the number .
if there are any differences in the lettering , it was probably because the car was actually in 2 nascar races . the second race was a one lap match race with another car at another track on another day . the tucker broke the same right rear axle on the first lap of each race . they blamed the breakage on the tucker's engine's high torque . i believe they said the factory was planning on strengthing this weak link .
this is just a guess , but they may have felt that the tape on the headlights wasn't needed for a one lap race . |

That axle problem was seen by almost every owner at some point in time and I read somewhere that someone had made a fix for it. _________________ A Model, Like Life, Is What Ever You Choose To Make Of It! |
