This is another in a long line of early 60's era modified cars that raced at Speedway Park in Jacksonville. Cars built in a backyard garage mostly by
volunteers after a hard day at some blue collar jo

not alot as a reference, but enough.
super glue is a must when working with resin...
this one is nearing painting & assembly. I'll post in the modified forum when done.

Thanks for doing a WIP. I always enjoy looking at your builds and think about trying something from that time period. |

Progress...
Chassis almost finished. Steering wheel is from a Monogram 56 T Bird.
Racing seat is Big Donkey resin. Dashboard, shifter, roll bars etc Evergreen plastic.
Engine(for the most part)is from a Revell 32 Ford coupe. Shocks (front & rear) are
Evergreen plastic.
Resin body is painted white. Needs lots of drying time before taping off & adding the blue.
Decals are done. The '4" number is for the next model...

Progress...
tires/wheels are also resin. Narrow truck type tires.
A combination of Ron Coon & BigDonkey resins.
By 1962 all the front runners switched to the wider
pure racing tires...

Progress...almost done !!!
Don't strive for showroom quality any more than the painter
did on the real cars back in 1960. Just a nice neat job, no runs!!
The many 2by4's always used a similar white/blue paint job, but
no two were ever alike.
used three different shades of blue:
Body: rust-oleum sail blue
Chassis: krylon true blue
Engine: rust-oleum spa blue
prefer Testors paint but the cheaper stuff works ok.
have to use a good guality tape that will flex,(look close,
you can see the white tape) then blue
tape to cover everything else not to be painted.
turned out ok. Ten more minutes for final assembly & apply the decals.
Nothing to difficult about doing one of these early 60's modified.
I'll post the finished model in the modified forum.

Nice jalopy. A cool fun quick build.
Ever try solder for headers. I used it all the time and then use aluminum tube for the collector. Lets me bend around troublesome frames and steering boxes, etc. |

Yes have used solder but most of these cars didn’t use a collector. The 1/16” tubing works well & easy to bend & shape.
Never referred to as jalopies. Called modified or skeeters (a southern term).
Even the flathead versions of these cars were called “sportsman”. |

Wow, how kool is that?!
Thanks for sharing, might get motivated to try my hand at one.
Looks like lots of decals available at slot car fever. Though I dont know anything about the cars they are depicting. |

Try the 16 I just posted. It’s easy. Only two colors,
Red & white.
I’ll send you a decal sheet for the 16.
Only place I know to get a Model A body
Is off eBay or mikes decals. |
