Not sure if any of you are readers or not. I am, but usually only about smallmouth bass fishing, the outdoors and racing. I've recently purchased a copy of Brock Beard's book titled simply J.D. I'm about halfway through and can't put it down. It is amazing what this guy did with less money than most top late model teams. I highly recommend it if you like to read.

I am about half way through it too, and I agree with your sentiments. It is a great story told well.

If you haven't already, read "Hard Driving - The Wendell Scott story.
I'm not much of a reader, but finished in a few days.

jh63fan, Thank you for the recommendation. As soon as I finish J.D., I'll get a copy of Hard Driving.

Among my large collection of racing books, there are 2 that really tell the story of NASCAR's Independent Owner / Drivers. One is the aforementioned J.D. McDuffie Biography. The other is Declarations of STOCK CAR Independents, by Perry Allen Wood. The chapters on Reb Wickersham, D.K. Ulrich, and especially Joe Frasson are a sobering look at how the sport once treated its' Owner / Drivers. Frasson had a win in the 1973 Alamo 500 taken away -- In VICTORY CIRCLE -- by NASCAR because he was NOT a household name and had rubbed the France Family the wrong way a few times. Both books are currently available from Coastal 181.
