Hey there. I've been wanting to do this model for 3 years now and finally will be getting to it. Early 80's I saw this guy racing at Ascot, and Rip Williams is still racing today at Perris Autp Speedway down south of Riverside, CA. His 3 Sons are now racing these 410 cu. in., 850 hp, 1250 lb. hosses but ole Dads Rip is still making the top three on the podium most Saturday nights they race. I took a number of pic's of his car May 27th, 2007, when the USAC/CRA boys came up to Tulare, CA. Here's a few pic's of the target;

Here's one I took at Tulare, notice the different mufflers which I will be making.

A friend of mine that lives back East in Indiana, and has a sprint car Forum, took the pic's I sent him and made the decals including the Sprint Car Hall of Fame decal Rip has since he was inducted in 2007.

And what do you make of his high dollar drivers seat?

Got 3 kits, two sets of decals and a want to get started. Will post with progress. thumbsup cheers

Can you believe it DannyT, a little burn out. I've been waiting almost 2 years to build this sprinter and almost don't want to get started. Will shortly though, just a little modeling burn out. This will be a great cure. The plan is to take my time with this one. thumbsup

Joe Fuller, who has the http://scalesprints.free-forums.org/scalesprints.html Forum did the artwork from a number of digital pic's I took of the #3 John Jory owned, Rip Williams driven, sprint car at the Tulare, CA., race back in May 2007. Joe had Les Smirle print them.

Still stuck in this model burn out funk, but it seems to be going away. Decided to get started on the chassis mods to a downtube, stinger chassis. Here's a couple pic's of the stock (black) chassis and the modified (white) chassis. I still have to transfer the front shock mounts from the original chassis location to the new downtube location. They will need to be shorter and will use the kit shocks to get the positioning right.

I got a correct hood from sigmaman and his The Parts Box website, in the Sprint Car section. http://www.thepartsbox.com

Using the reference pic I took of Rip's car at Tulare is helpfull for accuracy on the mods required to make Rip's chassis.

This mod is really gonna be unusual and creative. I'm talking about the upper frame rails that kick/bulge out;

Well, this is quite a deal. More chassis mods to get it looking like the mod's on Rip's chassis. Cut the upper horizontal rail from the chassis, used a piece of evergreen rod, #222 1/16" .062, for the new down tubes and the upper frame piece that's kicked out like Rip's. A piece of .015" evergreen sheet for the sun visor at the top front of the cage.

This mod I'm not sure yet if it's right. I had to use the old front shock mounts and cut them short to get mounted on the new down tubes, at the right height. What I did was measure the location, height, angle and fwe/aft location using a stock chassis next the the new modded chassis. I'll know if I got the shock mounts right when the front axle goes in. We'll see, but I think it's real close. idunno Shocked

That looks great!

I could be wrong but I think that upper tube bend/bulge was done by the chassis manufacturers when people started using "alternate" engine styles like the Cup-style Ford and Dodge engines in sprint cars. The classic sprint car chassis was designed around the old smallblock Chevy, the Ford and Dodge engines are wider and have larger valve covers.

Good job mick.... it's getting there Cool I would say the kicked out top rails are for easier engine changing or something like that... in all my years I have never seen the rails kicked out like that around the engine Mr. Green

Progress is going slow, but I have till mid September to have it finished and hand it to Rip.

Trying to get the nose of the resin hood down some more. The black wires will be the down nozzle fuel lines for the exhaust side of the cyl heads and the nozzles in the fuel injector housings. Drilled the mag to take 4 pieces of red wire for the spark plug wires.

Slow and easy.

Got half the fuel lines installed and it is tedious, but fun.

Cut the axle at both spindles half way thru and bent the spindles so the front wheels will be turning to the right. Tenax 7R to initially hold the cut sections together then a dab of green ZAP to hold it firm.

Cutting the axle and turning the wheels is a mod I do to basically all of my sprinters, it gives the look of action.

Hey Mic, fyi some header flanges really help with the exhaust on these cars.

I may have to go back and add to this one, it was built before I started using the PE flanges.

This is the first engine I've put together in quite a while. Here's a pic of the real engine in Rip's car. They have the fuel lines to the injectors in the manifold loose, but you can see where they go, and the fuel lines are also loose in the exhaust sideo of the cyl. heads, just above the upper chassis horizontal bar. Two fuel injection nozzles per cyl.

Still have work to do, but it's coming along;

Since this is going to go to Rip Williams later in the year, I want to make it as accurate to the ref pic's I took in 2007. Notice there's no breathers on the valve covers, but a 180 deg tube with a breather on the end of it at the front of the engine;

Here's what I've done;

Rip is old school and has been using this seat for quite a while;

Here's what I've done so far, still a little more work;

Well, back after it again. Added a piece of felt to the back of the seat as per the ref pic of the seat. Working on the exhaust now, cutting the collector and clocking the end at a 10 deg off vertical so I can add the mufflers being made to the end of the exhaust system also as per the ref pic of the back of the sprinter. Will be removing the chrome off the suspension pieces as Rip is weight concious to the point of not painting the stainless steel radius rods, suspension pieces and front axle. Plan on painting them stainless steel.

Got the sprint car parts I ordered from the Parts Box and have all chrome removed from the parts now. Brake fluid worked well too. First off I'd like you to check this pic out. Last Sat night the USAC/CRA sprinters went north to Petaluma, CA., for a race. A local photographer got this shot of Rip Williams, #3, and his Son Cody Williams, #44, behind ole Dads. Must of been a great race for Rip, racing against his two Sons on the night before Fathers Day.

One of the parts ordered from the Parts Box was a current air box/filter. I added carbon fiber deca paper to the top of it because the box is made from CF and uses K & N filters. I started with the front suspension parts, but because of the small areas where the glue hold the parts together, I will be doing one or two parts per night for the next couple weeks until the suspension is complete.

Always said I'd rather be lucky than good. Looking around in the shed today for some green paint I ran across a piece of meta screen. Looking at it I said to myself, Self............that look about the right size scale wise for a rock screen for the Rip Williams sprinter. What do ya think?

Whew, I gotta tell ya working on this model is very tedious. Everything is so tiny, especially compared to the 1:24th nascar cup, nationwide & busch models I've been working on the last 3 years. Man, just gotta go slow and easy, I mean EASY. Very small glue areas that have to be cleaned of paint residue. Very rewarding, but very tedious. I ain't whining though, just seems so much smaller but yet the same scale, 1:24th, as what I'm used to.

Piecing together the unique exhaust system Rip ran at Tulare.

Using two sets of kit headers, some plastic rod and tubing to make it.

Got the body panels painted and cleared, here's a test fit.

The an fittings on the fuel tank cap are made from .040" plastic rod. The plan is to connect .020" plastic rod to them to simulate the fuel lines.

Getting started on the decals, white underlays were part of the decals sheet.............thanks Joe for the decal art and Les for printing them.

I used testors 1/4 oz. bottle enamel paints for the flat black on the headers, then used a stiff bristled brush with brown and then tan to simulate the caked/cooked on clay on the headers of the 1:1 car.

Got the front axle, tie rod, steering arm and steering link done. Whew, tiny and tedious stuff. Added the two fuel lines to the elbows at the fuel cap.

Got the eyes kinda crazy lookin, but it is an 850 hp, 1250 lb., no clutch/pressure plate/flywheel, fire belching sprint car so ya gotta be a couple bricks short of a load to drive these cars fast...................and Rip does. Shocked Shocked thumbsup
