As part of our RPM Club challenge, I am building the Fireball Roberts 61 Pontiac, using the Moebius Model King kit. For lack of suitable reference material, I won't be striving for a 100% accurate build, (and I will use the kit supplied roll cage rather that Smokey's unique version) but I would like it to be representative of his car. For instance, I have added the front shock towers and will have dual rear shocks as well. I am using the color references referred to in the "Pit Pass" article in the Oct. 89 issue of SAE, hoping that most of it would apply to the '61 car as well.

One question I have-the article refers to the shocks as being a silver-green metallic, (I thought Monroe shocks of this era were a blue metallic, or black). Can anyone confirm if this is correct and if so, a possible paint source? I haven't found anything available in our local hobby or automotive supply stores.

Thanks!

I'd go with blue. If they were green, Smokey would have painted them black lol.

Hi Tom,

If anyone was going to respond, I guessed it would be you, thanks! I seem to recall that you built one of the Moebius Pontiacs as well. Care to share which shade of blue and/or brand you used for the shocks?

I usually just brush them with Tamiya blue out of the bottle. They're small and fairly hard to see when installed anyway.
