Considering building a 71 Mustang that raced at Daytona driven by Al Straub (local driver). I have a Warren Tope kit which I am fully aware is a 1973 Mustang. My research says that the only difference from 71-73 is the grill which for my purposes was not stock anyway. Questions...

1. Is my 71-73 research valid?

2. Anyone familiar with this kit? (the repop)

3. I know I will need different tires and wheels and some roll cage work. What else?

Round2/AMT sells two different 71-73 Mustangs. The Tope AMT version is the recent reissue. They also sold recently, the MPC Mustang, sold as a 1973. The MPC has a much better roll cage and racing parts. Not perfect but I like it much more than the AMT.
The differences between the 71, 72 and 73 is front grille and bumpers with the rear bumper having over rides in 72 and 73. The other differences are interior trim which does not matter on a racer.
PPP can supply wheels and tires.
My MPC build of Somers short track car.

That looks like a 71 bumper. You can modify the 73 bumper to be closer if you want. The 73 was a rubber unit that extended forward more than the 71 which was thinner and metal stamping. The MPC 73 is the best to start with IMHO.

Does anyone know what chassis would have been used for a Holman Moody 1972 Mustang #15 raced by Wayne Andrews and also Max Berrier? In other words would it be based on a factory stock suspension like the T/A in the early 70’s or would it be a Nascar style front end to allow for very wide front tires? This car won the April 4th, 1972 race at Columbia SC.[/img]

They were half chassis cars like the Torinos. I would check and see if the width and cage fit of a Polar Lights Talladega chassis was close, if it is just cut the floorpan down to shorten the wheelbase to fit the body.

By the way, Revell is supposed to be tooling up a brand new '71 Mach I for release sometime this year. If you're not in a big hurry it might be worth waiting for it.
