I am looking at a few 1963 cars. Am wondering about some rules.

1. Were exhaust headers allowed or just factory manifolds?
2. Street tires or race tires?

"Factory based" exhaust systems were required in 1963. That doesn't necessarily mean...regular production..however. For example, Bill France allowed Mystery Motor 427 Chevrolet Impalas to compete that season even though only 48 of those engines were ever cast an NO street or over the counter versions (excepting the one MM bought by John Holman...but that's another story) were ever made available to the general public. MM 427s had two piece exhaust systems with GM part numbers. The top portion of each bank was cast iron.

Both Goodyear and Firestone were building race only tires (8.00/8.20 x 15) by 1963. Those tires were both track specific and right and left side specific.

Fomoco teams used factory "long branch" cast iron exhaust manifolds in 1963.
Mopar teams also used cast iron production manifolds.

The *sort of legal* 426 Hemi engines (no regular production versions were made by the time of the 64 D 500 and only a handful were ever made available to the general public by season's end...hence the ban on that engine in 1965) showed up with tubular headers in 1964 that were just as technically illegal as the rest of the engine package. But Bill France let it run. Fomoco teams still used regular production long branch cast iron manifolds that season.

Fomoco teams transitioned to tubular headers in 1965.

Thank you very much. Kinda of what I was thinking but wanted to see if anybody knew.

How about interior panels? I'm guessing stock panels and then later in the season maybe they got changed out to flat panels?

There was no hard and fast rule and things varied. But generally textured aluminum panels had replace factory door panels by 1963.
