|
|
I was a little boy and I think it was the late 70s to early 80s. I think the race was on something like Wide World of Sports but I can't remember anything except:
It was a very small track with a very small crowd and not many bleachers.
The way I remember it DW was leading the race on the last lap and Dale spun him into the wall in the 3rd turn and Dale won.
DW was backed into the wall perpendicular to the corner just sitting there. When Dale came back around after the race DW gunned it and slammed into Dale.
Now I could have the drivers wrong but I am sure it was Dale that spun the other driver.
I've searched everywhere and cannot find a video of that finish. |

Man has that track changed. I do believe it was Richmond but I still think it was around 1980. I could totally be remembering this wrong but whoever got wrecked into the wall was up there by themselves and was the only one who crashed. The guy in second who spun the leader won and when he came around the guy in the wall nailed the gas and t-boned him. |

Yeah, it was definitely a different race and I believe it was on the Wide World of Sports when they would only show portions of the race.. must be why I can't find it. But I believe it was Richmond.
The key to this race was how the victim got his revenge after the race when he rammed the guy who won, who was also the guy who spun him.
..And from this 86' race, now I see how Kyle got some wins |

I was stationed in Norfolk back in the late 70's. Saw a lot of good races back then. |

Not strictly on point, but I believe Richmond is the best track in NASCAR. I always liked watching the racing there, tight enough for close racing but wide enough that they did not have to hit each other to pass, although the OP was all about the crash. I watched a lot of Richmond Races on television over the years and always made a point to ketch them. |

My first Nascar race ever was Richmond in 1961. The track looked like that, but it was dirt. Junior Johnson, Joe Weatherley, Rex White and Ned Jarrett battled for the win. Weatherley won after Junior broke his 1960 Pontiac. Turned me into a Nascar fan for life at ten years old. |
