I'm a huge fan of the Grand Prix 2+2 so when the Salvinos JR company announced they were doing it, I was thrilled, and I knew I would be doing several builds with it right away. (Only one of them actually happened but the others are in progress at least). I wasn't planning on doing the Petty car...the paint scheme seemed far too complex than I could handle. However, last year was my best building year ever and my confidence was high, so I did it. I had originally planned to use the decals they make but they shattered badly - neon decals are tough on smooth surfaces and the car is not smooth- so I ended up masking it and painting the neon red, except for the roof, which is decal. Let me tell you, masking around the decal required some ingenuity and creative thinking but I pulled it off...mostly. I had to touch up one spot but otherwise it worked.
Paint is Tamiya TS-23 Light Blue and their TS Fluorescent red. 36 I think? Don't recall. This is the first Richard Petty car I'd ever built, mainly due to the complexity of his paint schemes, which, like I said, I didn't have the skills for. Since I finished this one I've done two more, and while it is challenging to mask his cars, it's not impossible. I'm fully capable of doing it, as you'll see. Unfortunately the neon colors don't photograph all that well.

That paint looks smooth to me. And the masking looks like it was perfect. Beautiful car. |

What did you use for the grill?, or is it the kit supplied one?
As for the paint, I've read elsewhere that if you use TS-36 (Florescent Red) , then cover it with TS-96 (Florescent Orange), its a great match for the 'Vermillion" color.
I plan on scanning the vermillion decals and making a vinyl mask then using the TS-23, it costs way too much to get the MCW paints shipped to Canada ($38 for $15 worth of paint, .. Postal costs. |
