1965 was expected to be a banner year for Dodge and Plymouth until NASCAR
banned the big HEMI engine. Ray Fox built the 65 Dodge
for Lee Roy Yarbrough to drive but really no where to race.
Richard Petty went to the drag strip for fun.
Model is built from an AMT snap fit kit. Has plenty of detail to work with.
But I did use glue...

Did run in the 1965 Daytona 500 as an independent. Later
in the season Fox and Yarbrough switched to a Chevy.

Added a blower to the big Hemi and set a closed course speed record (181mph). Ray Fox said he believed the car had 1000 HP with this setup.
Car could have gone much faster. Actually coasted from the third turn to the
checkered flag.
Really wanted to do this version but didn't have the patience to create that hood!!

nice job. I agree with the choice. That hood would've taken half a tube of Squadron white putty.

Yes for sure on that hood.
Difficult enough to get period correct racing tires under the wheel wells
and retain the “stock” appearance of the body. Plastic on this model was
really thick. Dremel came in handy. Also a big hemi engine is a tight fit.
One reason I like building late models & modifies. If “sheet metal” is in the
Way just cut it away.
I do most of my posting in the late model, modified (etc) forum. Unusual for
me to be posting on the dark side…

AWESOME BUILD!!!

Really like the back stories to these builds. My knowledge of this erea of NASCAR has molstly come from builds from this era.
It would be the August/September issue SCR magazine when I started folowing NASCAR.
Bought that issue because of SCR's coverage of the '68 Indy 500....

The numbers & stripes are from the Ray Fox 65 Chevy set (mike’s Decals).
The rest (Dodge, blue emblem, Hurst, 426 ci) are custom made.
Most of the models I built use custom made decals. But decals of the stylized
“3” of Ray Fox didn’t change much through 1969 (readily available).

Nice job! I used that kit (in its Polar Lights issue) for a K&K Gordon Johncock car. One of the first projects I did on this forum. Designed my own decals for that one.

Like to always add a story to everything I’ve done lately. Not to detailed !!!
SCR was a great source (and still is). Was looking for the 1969 issue this morning that covered the Permatex 300. Need a clear picture of the winning car for my next project.
Have lots of SCR copies (somewhere)….

And this car went to Daytona in '66 and won the second Qualifier with Earl Balmer driving.

Yes the picture is actually 1966 with Earl Balmer’s name on the door.
When LeeRoy drove the car in the 65 Daytona 500 the car had “DODGE” in a small font on the qtr panels. Assume Fox ran the car as an independent possibility with a 426 wedge engine. Just guessing.
In 66 leeRoy was back in a Dodge for owner Jon Thorne. “The purple Dodge Charger” #12. But I think it started out red & white.
Some day will do a model of the 12…

That’s good news. I’ll do another version of this one with the correct hood when available.
Look forward to a PPP decal sheet also…
