1963 version of the 1953 Studebaker. Some debate as to weather this
car was Pontiac or Hemi powered. but what ever was under the hood
LeeRoy won the race.
Built this model with the hemi engine. Except for graphics identical to the
64 car. I think it was the same physical car and my opinion
from everything I have read it was Pontiac powered both years.

The Permatex 250 was the most interesting race of Speedweeks.
At least 50 cars would start the race. Local NASCAR track
champions were given an automatic starting spot.
The majority of the field were X Grand National cars at least
three years old. Plus many oneoff cars built just for this yearly
race. Sheet metal could be no more than 10 years old.
Any combination of frame, body, and engine was apparantly
allowed(for the modified cars) and there were a few odd looking creations.
The #70 Studebaker was fairly straight forward. Very good aerodynamics,
the car appears to be built basically like a Grand National of the day but
with a big cubic inch modified engine. Anyway thats the best I can tell from
the available photos.

Early mockup. Have to add the bar to create the porthole window, work the
headlight area over for better air flow, and open up the wheel wells.

Used the Studebaker undercarriage and aluminum tubing for exhaust.
Tires are period correct Grand National used in 1963 and 1964.

Used the interior tub. Made a Grand National type roll cage with shrink tubing for padding. (evergreen .062 rod for the roll bars). do the roll cage correct and its hardly noticeable on the finished model. Stock seat modified
for racing.

Big HEMI in the 1963 version.

Pontiac power for the 1964 race.

Love this one, very well done conversion. I saw quite a few Permatex races because ABC Wide World of Sports would feature it.

Engine built by a Pontiac engineer. Most likely a 2x4 barrel drag-spec 421SD, they weren't legal in NASCAR with the 2x4 but they were legal in a Modified or in the Daytona Continental race. I've heard conflicting reports as to whether or not it was the same engine Goldsmith used to win the Continental in the Nichels Tempest or a different engine but it was a Pontiac.

The 1963 version of the Studebaker doesn’t say “Pontiac Powered” on the hood. The 64 version does.
I did these Studebakers for a personal friend of LeeRoy Yarbrough. Said Lee Roy told him the race winning Studebaker was hemi powered. He was also at the race in 63 & 64(but only 12 years old at the time). Very close to the Yarbrough family, even to this day.
I have read everything available and as I said I do believe both years the Studebaker was Pontiac powered. Can’t find anything in writing that there was a hemi under the hood.
Yes did this model with the hemi engine, but did the same model some years ago with a Pontiac engine.
My fourth (and last) Permatex Studebaker, including the Red Farmer #97.

From an article in motor trend magazine by Herb Adams.

“ Sometime prior to February 1963, Tom procured a dead 421-SD under Pontiac's employee-purchase program, rebuilt it, and supplied it to Cam Gagliardi and Gil Kramer, who put it in a '53 Studebaker. In the NASCAR Modified 250-mile race (Permatex 250) on February 23, 1963, it was clocked at 163 mph, qualified on the outside pole, led 74 of 100 laps, and won the race”.

My first attempt at the 53 Studebaker. Can't remember
the year but was long before I had ever heard of the HEMI
rumor for the 63 car. Both of these models were done with
Pontiac power...

Yes, Tom Nell (spelling?) was the Pontiac engineer. The race results at ultimateracinghistory.com list it as Pontiac powered also.
