I've been away from NASCAR modeling for a few years and I want to pick up on a 71 Road Runner project I started several years ago. I started with a stock 1971 MPC Road Runner body. I did all the body mods to make it the NASCAR version. Then I began to modify an AMT 1969 Road Runner chassis since this was all I had at the time. I was having trouble getting the front suspension right on this chassis.
I have since acquired an early 70's MPC NASCAR chassis and the more recent Polar Lights 74 Charger kit. I want some advise on which chassis I should use for this project. Should I continue with the 1969 AMT RR, the early 70's MPC chassis, or the PL Charger. I know each one has its pros and cons.
I also want to know which roll cage is more suitable. The MPC seems too thin while the Polar Lights appears too thick. I was originally going to scratch build my own but I don't think I want to go that route now.
All comments and suggestions welcomed. Thanks. |

Rocket, the Polar Lights chassis is what I would use given those three choices.
You are right about the thickness of the PL cage. I have used two PL chassis' (one for a '71 RR) and both times, I substituted the roll cage from a Polar Lights Ford Talladega or Mercury. The scale thickness on those are much better.
Scratch-building is definitely an option but the Ford and Merc cages don't require but a small amount of tweaking to look right. If I remember correctly, I just had to widen the cage slightly overall and adjust the height somewhat.
If you don't have any PL Ford or Mercury's to rob one from, drop me a PM as I'm sure I have several partial kits with the cage unused. Will be glad to send you one if it'll help.

John, thanks for the advice and for the kind roll cage offer. I do have a couple of PL Fords and Mercury's that I am not planning to build so they will be perfect. I'll use the PL chassis since I won't be building the Charger. Thanks again for your help. |

You could also pick up one of the Salvino's kits. The Grey Ghost Oldsmobiles generally have the Mopar style chassis and the cage is much more to scale than the Polar Lights kits. |

Thanks for the Salvinos suggestion. I do have the Grey Ghost Olds kit so that's another option. I just received Salvinos new 73 Charger in the mail today and it's got lots of extra parts. Very accurate looking body too. |

i had been told to use a 68 road runner chassis for a daytona body. would that be ok for the daytona? and wouldn't it fit in rocket's 71 road runner? he would have to make or find a cage anyway and the 68 has all the running and suspension he/I need. reason I ask is I am planning on doing a daytona soon and am also interested in rocket's solution for the chassis. i was going to use a amt ford cage.

Tom does this kit have the same chassis as you are suggesting?

I think that one has the updated rear suspension and the torsion bars removed from the front. I know the Grey Ghost and the Donnie Allison Olds had the Mopar style chassis, I think they changed it after those two. |
