|

I've been working off and on the last several weeks on a build but haven't really shared any updates. This is Davey Allison's car from the '92 Winston to go alongside the Kyle Petty car from that race I built recently.
Paint is (basically) done! Finally! I had to repair a crack that formed on the nose of the car twice, but after reinforcing the snot out of it, it finally cooperated. TS-14, the final coat was decanted and airbrushed, then polished out to blend where I had to patch up the paint doing those crack repairs. I'm just waiting for it to cure a little more before clearing, but also I need to touch up a couple spots around the window edges on the right side of the car. The rear spoiler is built from scratch and the front valence is modified asymmetrical like the real car.
For the chassis, I used the chassis from the '91 Monogram Davey Allison kit, but the rollcage was completely wrong for this car, so I ended up rebuilding a lot of it from scratch using evergreen rods, plus I used evergreen sheets to build the oddly-shaped box behind the driver's seat area. The ignition boxes are also made from scratch. It's still very much a WIP at this point, you can see I have a handful of pieces of rollbar padding on there at this point.
I tried to make the dash as close to how it looked in that specific race as I could, including painting the outsides of only 3 of the gauges black. I also made the sticker to the left of the Texaco star by hand entirely from sharpies and paint pens -- it's a bit sloppy up close since it's so small, but it'll look just fine when you're looking at the finished car.

Clear coat is done and polished out, and decaling is underway. I had a little bad spot in the clear on the left side where the yellow stripe goes that ended up being very visible once I got the yellow decal on it, so I removed the decal and sanded the area down there. Unfortunately the decal wasn't salvageable, so I have a new set on order. In the meantime I've gotten the right side of the car nearly done. I tried to make the contingencies, etc. as close as I could to how they were in the '92 running of The Winston, which was quite the chore!

It's been awhile since my last update, so here's a quick one. I ruined half of my sheet of decals and had to order some more, so that slowed things down a bit. I'm now almost done decaling the car, but now have to go back and replace one of the yellow stripes because I ripped it somehow after it dried. But in the meantime, I've been doing some detail work on the cockpit. Here's a quick dry fit to show some of it off. The seat is nearly done and I should be able to put a coat of flat clear on it in a day or two along with installing seat belts. I also added the rear-facing onboard camera on the top rollbar and some wiring.

Almost done with the interior. The engine and fuel cell areas are completely bland since I'm just treating this as a curbside build, but anything you can see in through the windows I've tried to detail well. I wanted to really capture the look of what you could see in video from the race that shows the interior, and it's been a pain! I still need to add another cooling hose and do a little cleanup stuff,. touch up some paint, etc.

Outstanding! I really like your extra detail on the seat padding. |

Thanks Rob. That seat was super cool looking and very distinctive, so I had to try to recreate it! |

One of the Days of Thunder Lumina kits can be used as a chassis donor to update the Thunderbird kit. It fits with minimal modifications to the front clip. |
