Just finished over the weekend. Took 215 hours to build including the decals which took 56 hours of that time. This is supposed to represent the last winged warrior that competed in Nascar. The 1971 Daytona 500 was the race. Mario Rossi prepared the car and this was the only race it ever appeared in. Bill France changed the rules on these cars for 1971, saying that if you wanted to run one you had to run a 305 cubic inch engine with one 4 barrel carb. Rossi took him up on it and almost won the race. He used a Keith Black prepared 340 cuda engine that had been prepared for trans am racing. It was destroked to 305 cubic inches. This stock block engine ran at over 9000 r.p.m.'s all day long and survived. If Brooks had'nt got caught up in a wreck with Pete Hamilton, he could have possibly won the race. They were fighting for the lead on laps 97 and 98 when they tangled. Brooks ended up seventh. If you want to see how it came together click on the link below.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!
As mentioned over at Short Track Models, this is one FANTASTIC BUILD!!!
Don't remember if any TV network showed a tape delay of the '71 500, but in the issue of Stock Car Racing magazine, they had a pic of Brooks hitting the spinning Hamilton.... _________________ Ed. K |

Ed, for some reason I remember watching this race on t.v. back in the day, but it could not be live because they didn't start doing that till 1979. It must have been one of those weekly shows like Wide World of Sports or CBS Sports Spectacular. Thanks. |

You have got that stance hammered down! Beautiful job.
Not sure if the race was telecast live but the '71 500 was the first race I ever attended at Daytona and I still remember my heart dropping when he hit Hamilton.
That was a great day in my life at that point. Not only was I at Daytona, but got to watch the race with Marvin Panch after hauling around Grey-Rock brake shoes and swag all over the pits and infield during the pre-race. I spotted him behind the main grandstand about 2 1/2 hrs. before the race and after I had gotten his autograph and spoke to him for a couple of minutes he asked me if I would be interested in helping him hand out some products and as he put it, "see all the cars before they get tore up". It turned out to be more work than I thought (cases of brake shoes are heavy!)but I loved it.
The wing car didn't win that day- but the other Richard did- so all was well.
Again, a beautiful job on an historic car. Thanks for sharing.
