Ever notice that some of the older cars, they did not paint the piece of aluminum used to cover the exterior door handle. These cars were quite likely painted and it would seem to me that the piece of aluminum would have been fitted BEFORE going to paint. Just always seemed odd to me. _________________ Dennis

They might have been attached at the same time as the other aluminum pieces, like the rear bumper fairings, which went on after the paint. |

I do not know exactly when drivers started using the metal to cover where door handles are. Got a b/w pix of Petty in his 64 Plym. Still had the outside door handle on the car.

Per the Nascar rule books, 68 was the last year handles were allowed.
Now, you could have removed them in 68, but in 69 you could not have them at all.
Look at the front edge of Petty's Ford. All that rake and it is still vertical!
The bumper is pulled forward, like his 68 speedway Plymouth.
This maintains the hood template still fits! No speed secret as others also did it. |
