Does the '71 Charger use the same power bulge hood as the '73-'74?

The 71 Charger used a flat hood - like in the mpc Buddy Baker 71 Charger - I think the middle of 71 or 72 was when the bulge hood was used - I may not be 💯 right but I know for a while that in 71 the hood on the Dodge Charger was flat

The bubble hoods started to appear in mid 1971, when the hemis started using the raised lid on the bathtub intakes.

This was to help offset the penalty of restrictor plates, sleeves, tapered spacers, etc.

The manifold lid is a good inch taller, increasing the bathtub intake plenum area substantially.

First pic is from the Daytona 500.
I'd consider that early in the 1971 season...

p.s. that Isaac car is a 1969 Nichels re-body. Note the main hoop compared to the newly built Baker car. Cool

Just looked up a few races.
Baker won the Rebel 400 in a flat hood Charger

Isaac won the Firecracker in a bubble hooded Charger.
It had a 426 wedge. Carb spacers were used, where advantageous.

A couple of photos showing power bulge hoods on the Baker car. All appear to be on the later red interior version:

Was at the '71 Firecracker and I remember like it was yesterday watching the final laps holding my breath that Isaac's hood didn't rip up the rest of the way.
Almost 18 years later in the same seat, I would repeat that feeling watching D.W. bring the Tide machine home on fumes.... (at least that's what we were told at the time:)

No worries. I've got a prototype on hand, I'm just waiting for the Salvinos unit to get finalized so I know my dimensions are right. Smile

It was originally slated for late June. Then later this year. Right now they'd like to hit fourth quarter.

Yes. The '71/'72 body will be one release and the '73/'74 body the other.

Hope they do a good job. I doing a '71 flat hood for the AMT kits. Maybe it will fit the Salvino, if not I'll build the AMT kit.

That's being done as well although, I don't know if any progress has been made yet.

Any previews of the '71? I've seen early CAD and proto photos of the '73 but I must have missed anything on the '71.

I remember listening to that race on the radio. Even in Detroit, it was a hot day.
Is that the race that Petty caught a driveshaft in the bumper??

Here's the skinny as of today, 7,2,2020.

First out will be the '73 style Charger. Contract negotiations are being closed now. They are shooting for the holidays as a release date AT THIS TIME. (We all know things can happen but, fingers crossed) Hopefully Thanksgiving but likely Christmas time.

The '71 style will be made from the existing CAD drawings and a separate sliding mold will be made for that at a later date. (undecided at this time.) Again, it may or may not come with a flat hood, but if it doesn't there will be one available. Please post any hood underside shots you may have, flat or otherwise. Smile

Just curious: Will these Chargers be copies of production cars or the Nascar spec'd race cars, which had modified bumpers (lower pulled forward) & 1/4 panel flares?

Salvinos doesn't do production street so, NASCAR spec all the way.

This is a subtle hack...I wonder if the model designers observed it.

Look at the Petty Charger run in the Daytona 500 in 1975.

Compare to a street version.

Plenty of tin bending!

Lower front bumper pulled ahead.
back of hood elevated by base of windshield.
"A" pillars tweaked.
rear bumper to 1/4 panel edges more defined.
1/4 panels in front of rear tires flared out.
rear tire opening smaller.

The rake of the body allowed laminar flow over the back glass, allowing a smaller rear spoiler to be used to balance the aero of the car.

By 1975, Petty had the car as slick as it could legally be to get by the templates. checkers2

If you're looking for a pure car of any one Charger, you'll be dissapointed. While the race elements are there they won't pertain to a specific car. If the nose were pulled forward Petty style, you'd have to modify it to get a different style. With that said Salvinos is producing a Charger that is a great base for any charger, modifications like bumper angles and such are left up to the builder.

I was just pointing out the differences from a production Charger to a Petty Charger.

I agree, any specific drivers/team would have done different changes from a production car.

Impossible to please everyone, out of the mold, so to speak.
