I have a question on the MPC 1974 Roadrunner kit. I had a 1973 right
off the showroom floor and made a model years ago using the old AMT
1974 GTX. This kit looks similar but a better exhaust. It's not as good as
Revell's detailing but it's the only game in town for me. What was the big difference between the '73 and '74 bodywise? Anything visible? I think
I was told it was the vents on the rear of the hood. Thanks---John _________________ I hear the voices and obey

Here's what my '73 looked like. It was a 360 cu. in. auto with slap stick
dual exhaust, 4 bbl. gold with white stripes and very comfortable seats!

I just watched a video review of the MPC '74 Roadrunner. It is basically
the old AMT kit with the same chassis BUT a dual exhaust as it should
be. The interior is the same as the AMT kit BUT this time the correct
dash board and instrument cluster. The old AMT kit had a '75 Roadrunner
dash, why? The engine is the old AMT no detail 440. I paid 30 bucks
but it seems to me to be worth maybe 15 bucks at the most. I really hope
Revell would do one but that's a dream that will never come true. So it is
basically the old kit I built 8 years ago with a new dash and molded in dual
exhaust. The only other good point is the decals have the correct stripes
and the 360 which my '73 had.---John _________________ I hear the voices and obey |

The Chassis from the AMT 68/69 road runner fit under this car with only a little trimming. |

Thanks, I have an AMT '68 Roadrunner, may become a donor. What else
can I use for "home improvement"?---John _________________ I hear the voices and obey |

I decided to do this kit as is and do another with revisions and kit bash later.
I want a "curb model" for my shelf. Here is a start to this as is build. It won't be too quick as I am fixing anything I can to make it a bit more presentable.
I have found many flaws in this kit, the new correct dashboard does not fit
well at all in the interior tub. For now here is what I have done. I took the
440 and made it look sorta like a 360. cut the thing that resembles a distributor off the front water pump and fitted it to the rear of the engine
block where my 360s was. It's not perfect and I am not going whole hog on
this build. That will be on the next one.---John

My complaint is that it doesn"t come with the Roadrunner cartoon character figure - seriously might be good if you want to build Buddy Arrington's 74 Plymouth that he ran |

This is not a kit up to today's standards. It has subpar molding,
very few parts and options and little to no accuracy. What it
does have is tons of flash and a somewhat accurate body and
grill. That's it, I had a '73 Roadrunner and I am stuck with this
kit or no kit. I have been building AMT kits since I was a kid
back in the 60s, even those old kits were much better than this.
I am not happy but I will do the best I can with what I have, I
really don't want to buy multiple kits to build one car. I might look
for some and see if I can find a few bargains but this is a big let
down to me. So enough complaining by me and on to the build.

Actually I shouldn't complain. I found this kit for $119.88 and it
is EXACTLY the same kit I just bought with a few extra details that
amount to nothing. No more rants from me.---John

If you use the 68/69 Roadrunner/GTX chassis you can use all the appropriate parts from those kits. I think the interior from the 73/74 can be used. I bought a dash from Hart resin parts, it fits fine. The MPC kit is pretty much what you got back in the day, except the decals, which are better. I got two early versions and they only had single exhaust engraved on the chassis. Probably payed $20 for each. When I was much younger maybe paid 4/5 bucks for these kits so it's really hard now to pull the trigger on these kits when the are 30+ bucks. Same goes for other new kits at $25+. I have to really want it to pay that price. Just as a funny aside back in the middle sixties you could get most convertible kits for about a dollar and they where sold everywhere, department stores, pharmacy's, Woolworth's etc. Oh yea and the hardtop versions where a little more $1.50. My how times have changed. |

Thanks James, are you referring to AMT or Revell kits for bashing?
I also remember the dollar kits as I started building around 1962 or
63 at maybe 10-11 years old. I physically "hammered" many steel
axles onto the rims. broke a few too!!! LOL I don't miss the axel thru
the oil pan though.---John _________________ I hear the voices and obey |

AMT 68/69 Roadrunner/GTX. There is a nice Hemi in those as well as a complete 440 in Six pack trim and I think also 4 barrel. I always liked that body style and thought it was such a shame they didn't have the high horse power engines in them. I have two of the earlier rereleases one for a Buddy Arrington racer and one for street stock with a hemi. |

I was first building kits around '69-early '70s and fondly remember my satisfaction with the level of detail, but revisiting them was kind of a let-down. Molded-in rear suspension, solid axle running through engine block, screw-down chassis...these were more common in AMT or JoHan kits, so MPC with its front axle pins and separate rear springs was a bit of a step up. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Everything is done in the engine bay and the glass and interior are in the body. All I need to do is add the chassis, front and rear bumper and light assemblies then do some detail painting and add the decals.---John

I've had Tamiya gold develop weird stain-like spots. I have read this is not very uncommon. Consider a coat of clear, sooner than later. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Yup, had that happen before to me. I DON'T even touch it with bare hands after I paint. I use gloves and still had that happen. As soon as the humidity
here in Florida goes down I will gloss cote it. Thanks for reminding me.---John _________________ I hear the voices and obey |

Here are those "stains" on my 1/48 Monogram Sabre Mk.5 Golden Hawks
display team model. It is noticeable on the top of the fuselage left side near
the rear part of the open canopy and on the right outer wing near the tip.
All that hard work and this happens. Wasn't the first time either. Live and
learn.---John

Thanks, I started the decals. The only problem is they are long and if when
cutting them you cause a "fold" they will break in the water. Not a problem
as they go back into place with a little fussing and careful handling, irrigate
a LOT! I am hoping a few applications of Solvaset will take the wrinkles out
of the decal on the hood scoop.---John

Here's a decal with that "fold" that will break in 2 when put in water. It is
actually a crease, easily caused on long decals when they flex during
cutting. I found out the hard way.---John
