The car is being done period correct using only vintage sheet metal and parts.

On Tuesday, ABC World News did a piece on the virus victims.
The late Larry Rathgeb was included.

This was the first Charger 500 to be built with the body tilted 1.5 degrees relative to the chassis for improved aero. (Nov. 1968)

Others Chargers followed, but the details are different.

So, the pics are only accurate for DC-93.

Plymouths were never built with body rake.

Added four photos at the dodgecharger.com link.

All the glass is in. Now ready for masking and "petty blue" paint.
The paint is being matched from the original left headlight door that Don White had kept, perfectly intact. A box was found a few years ago at Don's Shop with original parts in it.
Stuff like the headlight door, seat headrest, battery hold down/dry sump bracket, etc.
The door is a little bit lighter than current out of the can "Petty Blue" mixes.
You'd have to have samples side by side to tell. But, why not do it exact??

Hey, maybe the current Petty Blue mixes are wrong??

Rare photo of under the nose cone just posted on dodgecharger.com.

Keep in mind that the #88 is the only known car to have the cone to K frame completely sealed off.

Added a nice under car pic, showing the headers and dumps being lined up.
Dumps exit between the jack posts and rear of door.
Collectors are 3.5”, same for dumps.
The famous “X” brace on 1969 and most later MoPars can be seen.
Those add a ton of stiffness to the chassis, and are so simple.
They triangulate the floorboards.
As you can see, the floors are stock and the low hanging frame rails have
been shaved off.
Look at the torsion bar anchors!!

The use of carpet is wild. I find it is interesting that the seat mount allowed for an almost infinite amount of adjustment. Guess about any driver could be fitted in this car.

Documented drivers of DC-93:
Bobby Allison, Bobby Isaac, Buddy Baker, Charlie Glotzbach, Dan Gurney, James Hylton, Paul Goldsmith and Don White.
A lot of different heights there!

Very sad to hear that you no longer fully own the car and that it will be sold, just as soon as it is done. I assume that it is your partner, Ray Evernham's, desire to reduce the size of his collection that is pushing the sale? Can't imagine working on a project like that for the best part of 20 years, doing the research, hunting the parts, going through the various mechanics and body men you did...only to sell the car almost immediately (If it does sell...Car auctions ...ANY of them...are the wrong place to sell a restored stock car). Hopefully things will go better for you on your sale than they did for RE's recent sale of the Trickle Mercury. I am told that car sold for a paltry $60,000 after an embarrassingly low "high" bid of 50K on Bring A Trailer (another "wrong" place to sell old stock cars, BTW).

I’m fine with the way things are going!
Bottom line: it’s done and will set the standard for a
1969 MoPar stock car. Like I mentioned, it belongs in a museum
and I don’t have one!

You will find that museums seldom if ever pay money for cars to display. Ditto for NASCAR. They are happy to *display* cars...but they really don't have lots of funds to buy them.The market for old stock cars is hard to predict and driven by the ability to do something (like vintage race) with a car when completed. About fifteen years ago, the rich vintage racers on the Left Coast showed some interest in making drum brake stock cars the next "thing" in vintage racing. Unfortunately, that movement never really took off (owing to a number of factors, not the least of which being the large number of fakes cars out there). Now drum brake stock cars have few if any places where they can be run. The bloom may be off of that rose. As mentioned, I am sorry that you will not be able to enjoy the car after spending so much time on its restoration...if it sells, that is. Be very careful with Mecum...or any of the big name car auctions for that matter, Lots of smoke and mirrors. I assume your partner Ray will be handling that side of the deal. Good luck at the auction.

Heartening to hear the rumble of the mighty Craftmobile once again.

You're missed in your usual haunts.

And you're bang on about the auction sites. A brother in law put in some hard labor on a first class hot rod build, took it to the Mecum site in Florida where it was treated like cannon fodder. There were approaches, but no one hit the reserve bid level and it left the stage unsold.

Two days later, still enjoying the Florida sun (over the chill of Ottawa's winter) he bumps into an appreciative stranger at a nearby watering hole. They get to talking and sharing their affection for pre-WWII restorations. By the time the waitress is tipped, the deal is done and the car is sold for what it's worth.

Here they were in Florida and the buyer lived in Canada, less than 200 km from the seller's home. As I'm discovering nowadays trying to sell a huge sports photo collection, anything's worth what you think it is. Just need to find the right buyer.

I guess I should have worded it as somebody buys the car and loans it to a museum!

I don't see a connection between vintage stock car racing and this particular car. Too valuable to crash it!

For what it's worth, the car has the exact setup under it as it ran at Talledega, March 24th., 1970. And a documented,number matching Chrysler Engineering engine!

Guess we'll all see where it ends up. Thanks!

It appears there will soon be an objective determination of the car's value. That said, without a venue to use a vintage stock car, it is just a two ton paper weight. With none other than aesthetic utility. After all, you can't hop in and drive a car like that to buy a pack of smokes. Vintage racing is THE key driver of value for any vintage race car. Before vintage racing came into vogue, Shelby Cobras, Bud Moore Trans Am cars and the whole rest of the universe of old, outdated race cars, were worth either nothing (sitting as rusty junk behind someone's race shop) or very little indeed. As to your Daytona being "too valuable to race"...that is an opinion not shared by the owners of many other competition cars that accomplished far more during their own racing careers than the Daytona did. They race their Daytona 500/Lemans/Formula 1/Trans Am (etc.) championship/series winning cars. With gusto. Attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed or any of the high end, domestic vintage festivals (as I have) and you will see. And, they can afford and are committed to repair them as parts wear or get damaged during their use as originally intended. But for vintage racing I'd wager your car would have nowhere the potential value that it might turn out to have. Here's hoping the Mecum results are to your liking. A rising tide floats all boats after all. [/u]
