I am currently doing a 72 Bobby Allison Coke Monte Carlo. The tires that came with the kit are treaded. Just want to make sure this if this is correct or do I need to get some aftermarket slicks. Thanks for the help guys.

uugh... thought I would be nice and do some research online for ya and give you an answer. some articles that I found stated that Junior Johnson's team tested the first Goodyear slicks at Talladega in 1969, and that David Pearson won later that year at Talladega with slicks on his car.

But... if you look at Mike's Decals page, the Goodyear PPP tires from 70-74 have a very mild tread on them, while the 75-88 are slicks.

so, I don't really have an answer for you.

Thanks for looking 18 degrees, I have looked at photos and races from 72 on youtube but just can’t make out which type they are running.

Not sure but what may appear as tread on the tires after '70 or so may be a pattern of slightly raised wear indicators. If memory serves me, it seems like the first slicks that I was exposed to had what looked like little "flipped-open" blisters as opposed to the line of holes that have been the indicators since.
Again, going on memory and it dang sure isn't what it used to be!

Looking through my UMI Publications NASCAR yearbook for 1973, it appears Goodyear was supplying slick tires for Daytona, Talladega, and maybe Michigan, and " treaded " tires elsewhere. The tread pattern was a very shallow cross-hatch, ( almost a diamond plate pattern ) with short grooves running up the sidewalls ( the last inch or so ) where they meet the tread. This tread was not really visible when the cars were on the track, only in pit road shots. I would suggest sanding down most of the tread pattern on your kit tires for a more accurate appearance.
A look at the UMI 1975 NASCAR yearbook confirms that slick tires were used at all tracks by then, so the changeover occurred during the 1973 - '74 period, as the Mike's Decals sheet would confirm.
The treaded tires gradually went away after the Junior Johnson tire test at Talladega confirmed that the extra rubber required for a tread pattern was retaining too much heat, which caused the tires to blow. The original track surface at Talladega also contributed to tire problems at early events there.

I'm guessing the Allison Coke car reissue has the original ties and wheels in it. I'd scrap those and go with the PPP wheels and tires. They will make a ton of difference in your model. The kit wheels are far too dep, and the tires are too narrow. Just my 2 cents.

I couldn’t agree more with this idea. I have a Foyt #11 1969 Torino, the kit tires are decent and the kit wheels are exactly the same style as the ones available on Mike’s site. But i went ahead and changed them out in favor of the aftermarket pieces, just because.

First run with slicks I know of was 72 Talladega 500. There were problems with them in that race, first showed up when Joe Frasson blew 2 rights and took out Isaac. Then everyone went scrambling for the "old" tires. James Hylton won that race running the "old" tires.
