I just ran across this pic of Pete at Daytona and I don't remember his car having the rookie yellow stripe in any picture of it I've seen. I thought he had already run some GN races previously. Could the pic be from the qualifiers possibly and they were allowed to remove it before the race?

The stripe is not on the car in the 500 race film on YouTube. Hard to know why it was removed though.

Is it possible that's from the spring race at Talladega in '70? Pete would have been a rookie at that track. Pete had raced in the '69 Daytona 500 for A.J. King so I can't imagine they would require a rookie stripe at Daytona in '70.

That makes more sense then that it's Talledega , plus the stands are packed too far down the straight for it to be a qualifier in 1970.

Pete certainly was NOT a rookie after the spring Talladega race, as he would win both races there in 1970.
