EDIT: I stand corrected... It looks like it's 1987 contingencies. I must have been thinking about the 1991-93 sheet that has each year.

This is a great thread! I'm enjoying all the old stories and great info. The fender group *should* be the 1987 Talladega winner. You know how fender pictures go on these '80s cars. _________________ Owner of Mike's Decals www.mikesdecals.com |

the last photo in dolphinfans post definatly does not have the gold stripe. there is no question of glare there. maybe there were a couple of bodies left with the gold stripe from the year before where they just slapped the new foil #'s on and didn't bother to repaint, like a road course car. it is known that a lot of times teams used to stick with a past year/body style at certain tracks as long as the body was still legal if they thought the body was more competitive than the curent years body. that happened a lot at road courses and super speedways.
it was probably just easier and time effective to just replace the #'s since the scheme was close.
i myself would probably stick with no gold stripe on the foiled cars.i'm just saying that's me, we all ultimatly make our cars the way we want or decide to.

I'm not so sure. The gold stripe is clearly visible inside/behind the door number in that photo. I'm convinced it's there, just washed out. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...

Initially, I didn't think it was there either, but after I looked at it awhile, I'm fairly certain it's there as well.

Billy Kingsley reported on Facebook that he watched the '88 Daytona 500 on ESPN Classic and the gold stripe is present at least on the Daytona 500 version of the Havoline car. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...

I don't recall the Havoline car ever not having the gold, be it painted or gold foil. Of course I didn't see every incarnation of the car. If the picture in question is the one that has Artimus Images beneath it, I can see the gold. It shows up on my monitor in the top oval cut out on the #8. That was a beautiful race car.

mack, i see it too but if you look closely it looks to be a continuation of a reflection of an oject that you can see in the foil numbers not a gold stripe.
i still don't see the stripe in that photo. i still am sticking with that is a photo of a body of the previous year that they didn't bother to repaint and just added the gold foil numbers. maybe there were one or two tracks they didn't want to mess with the areo of the car or the paint because of the added weight. if one car ran good at a certain track why mess with it.

Joe, you may be correct, . To me it looks like the bottom cut out in the 8 is solid gold, and the upper cut out is gold where the stripe would run throught it. The car in question is an '88 car. Either way, when I build that car it will most definitely have the gold stripe. You know back in those days they weren't near as particular about everything being just so-so from week to week. I seem to recall at one race someone in a green car running Mikeys' Pennzoil wheels late in the race. That was back when they sold unused mounted tires late in the race. They were a lot more concerned with performance than appearance. How I miss those days. |

That's a great story that I've never heard about the Havoline/Texaco sponsorship and makes perfect sense. I was just wondering recently why Davey ALWAYS seemed to go out of his way to mention the Havoline "STAR" Thunderbird when I've never heard of Havoline being marketed with the "star" campaign.
It used to be "Texaco/Havoline Star" then after NA$CAR probably slapped him on the wrist enough times, he shortened it to "Havoline Star." But he says it in EVERY SINGLE INTERVIEW!!!
If you'll remember, back a few years ago when Kevin Harvick first brought the Shell/Pennzoil sponsorship to the #29 car, NA$CAR made him completely change his firesuit and I believe the paintscheme on his car after the Busch Clash/Bud Shootout due to (by that point) Sunoco's exclusivity contracts.
So the Shell logo's were minimized and the Pennzoil logos were now the prominent feature on the car.
Wonder why Unocal/Union 76 didn't raise as much of a stink about Sunoco back then? They sponsored Charlie Rudolph #04 in a few races in 1987 and Ed Pimm/Brad Noffsinger's Rookie Of The Year efforts in Mike Curbs #98 for the 1988 season...before heading to Sterling Marlin/Billie Hagan. _________________ www.facebook.com/MatthewLewisAtlanta

I know on Rudolph's car they had to put "Motor Oils" under Sunoco, and on Hagan's car it said "Products", as long as there was no mention of gasoline they were all set. _________________ "A good racer is one whose head is in communication with his." - Richie Evans
