It took him almost a year but J finished his first model. It's an AMT 57 t-bird kit--not an easy kit for an 11 year old first timer. I provided some guidance--he provided the labor.

Nice Job. My 6yr old son and I just started on his firts kit, the new Camero snap-tite kit. Im going to let him do as much as he can or wants too. Plan to make some mods to it and glue it. He wants to try even spraying it from a rattle can. Models are a great tool in helping kids develope skills. Lets keep introducing model building to kids! Its become a lost hobby form them.

Great job by your son!
The skills of building models will shape him better in life than just to buy a "packaged" form. My son started out with simply kits, redid some (most) of my earlier builds when I was his age and did a better job. His attention to detail at times got on my nerves as I would let whatever detail slide. As he got older his attention turned to the real thing (Neons', his first car BTW) converted it from an automatic to a straight shift. The only help I provided was in removing the automatic once everything he loosen/removed was out of the way. Was top in his Auto Mechanic Class for two years until graduation and with a reference from his shop instructor got on at the local Ford dealer.
Not a bad hobby when all it started from was kit, a little imagination and a desire to do it by himself. _________________ "Guess what? I got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!"
