Problems with the Petty two tone again. My prep is weel and carefully done, extra work to make sure no mold release issues.

Now, taoe off on the blue and shot the MCW Petty Blue from a can which was provided to me by the owner. Pull the tape and end up with with sections coming along with it. Since I had plenty to remove, and now I know its getting a purple bath anyway, i tried the various methods suggested before. Pull back against itself, pull off at an angle, exacto trim a line, etc.

On at least a couple edges it seemed to hold ok. Only thing I noted was that i think in those areas the paint was not laid as thick and maybe i'll get. i wanna figure this out once and for all as i have more two tone jobs i want to use MCW on

Painting over the edge of the tape with either the base color or clear should fix all bleed through.

I've done some Petty 2 tone paint jobs for others too. But I painted em in reverse from what you're doing. I got the body ready for primer, sprayed it with a good automotive sandable white primer and let it dry for a day. I do a quick wetsand with 1000 grit paper then when its dry after the rinse, I always shot the flo red. After a couple light coats and at least a good day to dry, I masked it off and shot the blue. Wait about 5 mins and I pull the tape towards the blue to try and keep the lines as sharp as possible. Another day to dry and yet another wetsand but with 1200 grit paper just to knock off the high spots and lay the clear. I've never had any issues what so ever. Maybe I'm just bass ackwards but its always worked great for me. I built Petty's 200th win car and painted it just like this! The paint job came out perfect! I hope this helps in any way! I'm sorry to hear your frustrations brotha!

no bleed through issue, the trouble is the paint around the tape pulling off when i pull the tape off

Appreciate the tip. last go around i had on a Petty job i did it in reverse and the doggone tape (Tamiya and Sherwin Williams "knife edge") peeled the Flo red right off Sad

I only use blue painters masking tape. It stays down good and when cut with an exacto knife, it creates a really nice edge. And then when its time to pull the tape off, its not so sticky that it takes the paint with it. I've had issues with tape doing just that to my paint jobs. Its beyond frustrating! Since I've gone to the blue tape, no more issues

I have been using a blue plastic tape made by Scotch - 3M. It comes in 1/8 and 1/4 inch and I buy it from Micro-Mark as a set. It has worked great for me.

on two tone pettys, I had luck painting the flouresent red first, let dry, then clear coat over it. Let dry, and then go to the blue. I have found the red to lift way to easy.
