| Not the one I was thinking of but cool pic. I did find the article. I can't remember to stop and get milk on the way home but I could remember a K&K Charger in a '94 (June) Circle Track magazine. The car in the article is described as the orignal '67 chassis that was in turn modified into the the short track low rider. The modifications are actually described in detail in the article fairly well. Apparenty it was Issac's nine short track wins in this very car that made Nord decide to run the season in 1970. The history on the car is that it was originally builtin 1967, updated in 1969 and again in 1970. Its last race in GN was at Martinsville in Sept, 1972 where Buddy Barker drove it to a fourth place finish. From then it was sold to Ferrel Harris of Kentucky where it was run in Sportsman for several years. There is was sold to Gary Moulin of Missouri with Eddie Leavitt behind the wheel until the early 80's. It was at this point that Mike Kempton bought the car and returned it to its formar glory dressed as a std. 1969 Charger. Where is this car now? The restoration looks fairly well done. Naturally my scanner isn't working butonce it is I'll get some pics up. |

I will try to dig up the article on the "low rider" I had it out a few months ago. Harry Hyde went to Nichels to finish the chassis and really bent the rules just until smashing them. Like I said, the car was never in a wreck of any consequence, and was the main reason Issac won the Championship.
Harry moved bars around and reconfigured many parts of the chassis to get the thing slammed to the ground. IIRC, the body was dropped at least three inches over the chassis which necessitated moving a lot of cage/frame components around.

No, but I suspect the low rider was the car that influenced Chrysler to go down the path that led to the 2+2 cars.
If Harry had brought the low-rider to Daytona for the 500 it probably would have been declared illegal in '68 or '69. Honestly, NASCAR didn't tech the cars with an eye for that sort of rules bending on the short tracks in those days. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...

That one is an old Charger 500 & not the lowrider version which was a tunnelback body that wound up with a correct 1970 loop bumper.
Besides the 500 grille, you can clearly see into the interior & see where the 500/Daytona flush backlight is still there, as well as where the original backlight would have sat. Interesting indeed as it seems most of the Charger 500's were converted to Daytonas by the teams. I wonder how that one escaped that fate?
Very cool car though & it sits nearly as low as the lowrider. Ol' Harry did a lot of that modifying it seems! _________________ If you don't like the effects, don't produce the cause. |

That car was likely a Daytona that became obsolete when the '71 cars were built. Since the Daytona nose was a hindrance on the short tracks this team probably negotiated for some regular Charger 500 noses when they bought the car. _________________ The Dark Side, when cars were steel, bumpers were chrome and men were iron...
