| Hello, I was wondering if all of the Ford cars in GN/Cup racing that used a 429 ci engine were always the Boss 429? I know Ford did offer a ‘wedge head’ 429 for street use starting in ‘71. Wasn’t sure if all of the racing engines had the ‘Semi-Hemi’ Boss heads or some used the regular heads? Any info appreciated |

| Yes, there was some work with the wedge motor. I think I read Leonard Wood worked with the SCJ to see if it had any potential . Boss 9 was the only one raced. Maybe some independent driver may have tried it. |

When restrictor plates were first introduced, they were NOT all sized the same. Hemi headed engines (Fomoco and Mopar) got the smallest plates. Wedge headed seven liter engines got larger plates and smaller displacement engine got even larger or no plates at all.
As a result some teams experimented with the seven liter (ie 429) wedge headed big block Ford engine. Two that tried and race that engine in at least a few racers were the Wood Brothers and Junie Donlavey. Ultimately, that engine did not prove competitive against the Hemi headed engines ...even those those engines were more restricted.
I have collected a few shots of the 429 wedge in NASCAR war paint. Several of which were taken at the Wood Brothers shop in Stuart. I will post them on the Rany Ayers FB site for any who are interested.
