Bobby Allison's 1967 H-M Ford
This is one of the models I built when Randy's was down.
KIT: AMT modified from street to nascar stock car.
PAINT: Tamiya TS-19 Metallic Blue and TS-21 Gold.
TIRES/WHHELS: PPP (Simply the best!)
DECALS: Slixx. Contingencies from Powerslide.
BUILDING NOTES: Mostly kit interior but built cage using Evergreen 1/16" rod and added a rear firewall again using Evergreen sheet. Used spares for the dual carb set-up. Scratch built fire suppression system. Exhaust dumps made using Evergreen 5/32" tubing. Added the hoses for the rear end cooler.
PERSONAL NOTES: I had the special experience of sitting down and talking with Bobby this past fall and I during our talk I asked him which car was his favorite. He took a minute to think but he answered with this car. He said this was the best prepared and best handling car he had ever driven. It was also the car in which he got his first big win. BTW, his 2nd favorite was the H-M Mercury he drove in 1971. I could've talked to Bobby for hours. What an experience! Naturally I had to immediately build this car.
THE REAL THING:

I wonder if that particular car had any leftover stuff from Mario Andrettis' 1967 Daytona 500 winner? I've always thought that was a beautiful car. And Ralph Moody had a lot of respect for Bobby. Bobby didn't get along to well with Holman. Bobby could wheel anything, anywhere. You did a fantastic job on that, as usual. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. Beautiful job (as always) on what is my favorite variation of my all-time favorite stock car livery. The red numerals and red on the sail panels really made this car stand out. You captured the look to a T. The wheel/tires and the raked stance are PERFECT. I've had that kit and what you've turned it into is amazing.
Gorgeous job all around. I've actually been able to improve my modeling some just from paying close attention to yours.

Bobby, excellent build!!! Great attention to detail, and you nailed the "graz'n in the grass" stance perfectly. May I ask what chassis combo you used to replicate the half chassis. It appears to me you used bits, and pieces from numerous kits. Awesome build, and thanks sooooo much for sharing with all of us. |

Thanks for the compliments Fireball! I simply used the AMT kit chassis with a few simple mods. I replicated a H-M '65 Ford front chassis set up by first using some Evergreen strips to "box out" the top of the frame. I cut off the upper A-arms and make my own using Evergreen 3/64" tubing bent to shape using a candle to heat and bend. (I usually mess up a couple in the process until I get two that look correct.) I then add spindles from my spares or I have just made my own using bits of Evergreen. This where careful test fitting assures a proper front stance. I really spend a lot time test fitting the wheel mounting points with body on to ensure a good stance. I usually have sand a little or add some length to adjust the spindle location to the upper A-arms so that wheel mounts allow proper front stance. Then I add the front crash bar hoop and its supports. Next, I add Evergreen small rod for shock mounts. I normally use the AMT kit lower suspension pieces just to keep it simple. Add the kit radiator and brake master cylinder, any other details, and you're good to go! I added some miniature set screws to replicate jacking screws. I drilled a hole in the middle of the frame in the middle of the upper A-arms on top of the shock plate and then glued the screws in. Hope this helps!
