Basically, there are three full glue kits and three pro-finish style glue kits in the series.

Off the top of my head:

'95-'97 Round side:

Easiest way for me to ID the roundside on the box is to look at the photo of the built chassis on the side of the box. Roundside has no material sticking out to the side of the assembled chassis and rollcage, the cage sides are flush with the chassis.

'97-'99 Slab side: KIT EXAMPLE

Again, look at the chassis photos on the box. Slab side kits have a very obvious ledge sticking out below the rollcage like a shelf. Also, the slab side kits have the perforated piece attached to the roll cage upright that fills the gap between the rollcage and windshield post.

'00-'02 glue kit KIT EXAMPLE

These kits can be identified on the box by the headlight decals which aren't straight on the bottom but which have a prominent bulge downward and by the rear spoiler which is shaped like a W, or like a bird's wings in flight. The '95-'99 rear spoiler droops down on the outer corners, the '00-'02 are taller on the outer portions than in the center.

'00-'02 Pro-Finish

These kits were only offered as pre-paints

'03-'05 Pro-Finish style KIT EXAMPLE

Only done as unpainted, molded in white versions. The grille opening is rounded on the lower corners. Pro-Finish style, glue chassis.

'06-'07 Pro-Finish style KIT EXAMPLE

Only done as unpainted, molded in white versions. The grille opening is squared off. Pro-Finish, glue-style chassis with updated dash.

I think most people have little trouble recognizing the '03-'05 and '06-'07 kits, and Revell generally prints the year for each version of these on the box art.

You know I never did see the 04 kits in person, that is a oddball compared to how Revell dolls up their box art now.

Anyways, this comes up allot but with the #1 Polar Bear decal out now

1997 to 1999 Monte Carlo kit

examples kits

1998

Terry Labonte #5 Kellogg's, Dale Earnhardt #3 "Plus", Jeff Gordon #24 Dupont. Mike Skinner (remember him?? Laughing) #31 Lowes (thou I think this might be a 1997)

Other notable factors

slab-sided
no chrome in the kits
You don't insert a chrome grill in the front with these kits.
Also only the front bumper is what you attach to the body.
Most of the time if there is a NASCAR 50th anv. logo somewhere on the box, then this kit will work.

Also note Revell made 'lunchbox' tins that included most of the above for the 98/50th season.

I'm not sure if Revell made the 99 season due to the big change in style for '00

Hope this clears up allot of confusion with these years.

EDIT: I originally posted a question regarding roundsided vs slabsided MCs. It got no response here so I moved it over to the Modern Era discussion thread. Below is the link to the discussion my question generated. I thought it would be useful to post the link to that discussion here for future reference.
