I built this model to look like the car Al Unser, Jr. drove in his final win in Valvoline colors, the 1993 Molson Indy Vancouver.
Base Kit:
Tamiya 1993 Newman/Haas Lola 1/20 scale.
Paints:
Tamiya TS-15 Blue and TS-26 Pure White paint with TS-13 clear, all sprayed from the rattle cans, plus Tamiya gloss black paint finished with gloss, semi-gloss, or matte finishes as needed.
Alclad II chrome for the wheels, airbrushed.
TS-83 metallic silver from the rattle can for other bare metal pieces, with Tamiya Smoke used to darken/stain on exhaust parts.
Assorted Tamiya acrylic paints with Mr Color Leveling Thinner for hand-brushed things.
Molotow Chrome pen for seatbelt hardware and mirrors.
Decals:
Indycals car decals.
Scale Motorsport carbon fiber decals.
Supplemented with a couple of kit decals from the base Newman/Haas Lola kit I used (the EDS and cockpit decals).
Modifications:
Taller rollbar to match the style Galles Racing cars ran that year.
Replaced the pop-off valve with a scratch-made one.
Added antennae to the nose.
Added radio button and cable to the steering wheel.
Added rollbar adjusters to the cockpit.
Added scratch built wheel hub pieces on top of the screws that secure the wheels.
Added valve stems to wheels.
And now, entirely too many pictures, because this build turned out so photogenic that I just could not stop taking shots from different angles!

Excellent Build! There can't be too many pictures of a beautiful build like this, take pride!
The finish looks really smooth straight out of the can! Did you wet sand it at all?
Also, did you spray the TS-13 clear over the decals? I have heard many times that that clear coat is too hot to use over decals, though some are able to get it to work with light mist coats. |

Dude - that's a diecast.
No seriously though, simply flawless and clean build.
Congratulations on a fine build |

Thank you!

I wet sand with Micro Mesh sanding sponges, and then use Tamiya polishing compounds to really smooth it out and get rid of any sanding lines. I do that between every coat of paint and every coat of clear, but I only use the finest compound grits on the final coats of paint and clear.

On my last few NASCAR builds, I haven't cleared over the decals since they don't get clearcoated on real cars except some superspeedway cars. However, I decided to clear over the decals on this one since it does make it easier to dust. I let the decals dry for a week before applying the clear coat over them, and I sprayed it on with two light mist coats before a wet coat. I let that dry overnight, then the next day I sprayed a couple more mist coats before another wet coat. After that dried really well, I polished it out before applying a final wet coat and polished that coat out as well. |

That is a stunning build!
I have a half dozen of those kits in my stash, I hope to get to them someday. Doubt any will turn out as nice as that one though! |
