The Revell Hemi Cuda kit bashed with a few parts from the old Monogram 1/24 AAR kit and some scratch building to create a replica of Dan Gurney’s ’70 Trans-Am ride. The just released Power Slide decals are excellent and really helped lift the end results of this build as did Fireball Modelworks’ Minilite wheels.

Beautiful work! I don't know if the perfect stance or the work you did fabricating the cage to fit like a glove is my favorite aspect of it but it all looks GREAT!

My hat is off to you!!! I've been following your build since the beginning, and admire your research, and attention to detail. It shows wonderfully in this build. That cage is totally awesome!!! Thanks soooo much for sharing with all of us. By any chance, did you happen to jot down any dimensional specs of the cage build you'd care to share with us? What a stunning build. |

Thanks again for the comments. As for the cage I don’t know the dimensions but my process is very similar to what fabricators use on 1:1 race cars. I watched a few on-line videos and follow their methods and sequence.
1. Main hoop
2. Forward legs
3. Intermediate cross bars
4. Header bar above the windshield.
Some photos of my cage during construction. The most complex cage I have built to date.

The right side of the cage was a unique design, and I'd often wondered exactly how it was attached together, and tied into the chassis. Your pics show it very clearly, thanks. The design of the rear of the cage is pretty cool also. I've often tried to picture exactly how those cars cages were tied into the chassis. Were the two bracing bars for the shock towers tied into the rest of the cage, inside the car, or simply braces welded to the firewall, and shock towers? |

I found a few original photos of the roll cage construction. However none show the under dash area clearly. I suspect there would be a cross bar under the dash that the shock tower braces attach to. I chose not to model it since it can't be seen on the completed model.
Acid dipping (oops I mean "chemically cleaning") the unibody to reduce weight also reduced the structural rigidity, thus the need for the extensive roll cage and under body cross brace to regain the necessary stiffness.

Fireball Mike told me I needed to look at this build and he wasn't kidding! This is one of the best Trans-Am builds I have ever seen, AFX you are a master builder! That scratch build roll cage is dumbfounding! _________________ "And on the 8th day God created the Hemi!" |
