Looking for a spray can version of Poppy Red. Any suggestions. I use Tamiya a lot and nothing seems close. Thanks in advance for your help.

I saw a Youtube video from hpiguys workshop where he used Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red over a yellow base coat on an AJ Foyt stock car, all of his later race cars were poppy red

I've used Tamiya TS-49 too but without the yellow base and thought it looked good.

Always tough to match that red as every picture of his cars seem to give you a different shade depending on the camera used, overcast day or sunny, etc.

I just bought a 12oz can of Poppy Red from this seller, hopefully I'll see it later this week. It's solvent based automotive paint, so you'll need a good primer to prevent crazing. Once I get a few test pieces shot, I'll share my results.

Edit

In the spirit of the rules when it comes to vendor bashing here, I'd like to caution anyone considering doing business with Custom-paints-inc on eBay.

Along with the Poppy Red, I attempted to buy 2 other cans for a couple projects. Each can was $9.99 for shipping, but they advertised combined. So, I sent a request for a total like any other ebay transaction...absolutely nothing from them since Friday. I've sent a total of 6 requests and have never gotten a response or total. Beyond frustrating, buy elsewhere.

Just because they named the color Poppy Red it doesn't make it a match for the automotive color. 'Way too red.

Thanks Guys I did hear years ago on MRN the color was referred to as a tomato red. Just looking for a good spray can without investing big bucks.

Have you ever used it or are you judging solely by the can lid?

I come bearing a Poppy Red spoon palooza.

From left to right:
Paintscratch.com Poppy Red, KBS Coatings Chevy Engine Orange, Model Master Hugger Orange Lacquer, and Tamiya TS31 Bright Orange.

Everything was shot on top of Transtar 2n1 White primer. This stuff is a great primer for hot automotive lacquers.

Poppy - Chevy Engine Orange

Poppy - Hugger Orange

Poppy - TS31

In the end, the Poppy has just a touch more orange compared to everything else.

The KBS is similar to the Duplicolor Engine Enamels, so it's a little thick.

Unfortunately Rustoleum killed Model Master, so if you find a can of Hugger Orange in the wild, get it.

Tamiya TS31 is the most readily available hobby match, but it a little milkier in the orange compared to the real thing.

Hope this helps.

Spoon test. It's not a bad match for some of the photos but nowhere near orange enough for the real thing in sunlight. As Joe Oteri noted in his comparison, actual Ford Poppy Red is noticeably more orange than a lot of paints that are called orange.

I saw a car up at Salem Speedway that looked like it was "Poppy Red" and I asked the driver what was the color and he said Kubota Orange.

Thanks guys for all the help. I have a couple of spray cans of Hugger Orange I purchased when I heard Testor's was going away. Looks like that is what I'll use. Didn't mean to start anything. I do remember how continuous the color discussion was on the old board.
