Years ago I built a Wood Brother's Cyclone out of the Polar Lights kit. I was not content with the finished model, several inaccuracies with the body. I began a new body, modified the front of the hood, decreased the front wheel openings, knocked some height off the rear spoiler and added a proper gas filler.

So for years the body sat on my bench, unpainted. Last month I saw the new decal sheet Powerslie was coming out with and I got some paint and got going again. I used all Tamiya TS painta, with great results. The new decals arrived on Satuday and I began finisheing up the car on Sunday. Great decals, very well done sheet. Thanks to Poweslide and PPP for this great sheet.

Beautifully done Bill. Same here, I've built a couple of these in the past and not really satisfied.
You inspire me to take another go at these.
Can you share more on mods you did to make it work?

Pierre, what I did was add plastic to the front of the wheel opening, only on the front fenders. I then took the Dremel to open it up to a more realistic opening.
On the rear spoiler, I just sanded the top down and on the rear side to thin it back out. The rear tailight panel is not right on the kit either but I left it alone because I couldn't think of a good way to correct it.
The hood was the hardest part. I used a "W" nose resin hood to mark some lines on the front piece above the grille opening and then filed it down. I added Evergreen plastic to the front of kit hood and filed it to fit, I also added to the back edge of the hood to improve the fit. On the inside openiing I added a strip under the front edge and dremeled and filed to shape.

On the real cars, both the Merciry and the Ford, the orignal hoods were not modified, they were the same as all Montego and Fairlane/Tornino hoods. Only the stock chrome molding was left off. The filler piece above the grille was made to match the front edge of the standaard hood.

The only other thing I did to the body of the kit was to sand all the mold lines and ripples from it, which there are several areas. I also marked and fit the rear window to mount flush, which also greatly improves the looks of both the Ford and Mercury. The fuel filler, I just drilled out the kit dimple, added one layer of plastic to the back side, drilled that to match, to add depth then capped the rear of the opening and put a piece in the hole to represent the filler neck with cap,

Joe, Thanks, the roof was painted gold, then clear red and finally pearl clear. All Tamiya spray cans. I pained the top over a 5 or 6 hour period, since the Tamiya cures fast.

That is the best scale paint I could find that matched the roof on the real Wood Brother's cars of the period.

I probaly bent the nose down a little, the Merciry bodies are not as turned up as the Totino's.

Very nicely done. I am planning to use the new decals to redo one I did years ago as well. Hope it turns out as nice as yours.

Awesome! ..applause ..applause
What Tamiyas did you use for the red roof? (a question I always ask on WB builds)
I am thinking of trying Mica Red over Gold for an upcoming 72 season build.

Bill, the Wood Brothers said most of their cars of the era were painted with FORD candy apple red (a plain dark red) with gold pearl flakes in a clear overcoat. I tried this on several and was not impressed with the results in scale. What I find looks closest to my eyes is Tamiya TS-21 gold and TS-74 clear red over the gold. I have tried TS-65 clear pearl over the red, but really don't see much difference if the clear pearl is left off. This particular Spoiler II body does have the clear pearl over the red.
