Despite the lack of success of this car it has always been one of my favorites.
I could not find one of the original kits so I decided to build the 1971 race car from the MPC 72 road car kit.
The kit itself is as basic as it gets (to be polite) but the body is pretty good.
For the chassis build I started with the kit floorpan but grafted a Galaxie style front clip. I used the parts form a Salvino's unused chassis.
In the rear I started with a 71 monte Carlo axle and scratch built a long arm suspension as I did not have an available 80's T-Bird rear available in my spares. PPP wheels and tires complete the chassis.
I also scratch built a the fuel cell enclosure.
The 366 race engine was built from the kit block & heads with a trans from a Monogram kit and various other components are a mix of spares or scratch built.
The chassis was built to a scale 115 in wheelbase as was the norm of the era.
Interior build includes a modified Salvino's 70's Monte Carlo. I kept the kit IP but built my own gauge panel. Seatbelts were also scratch built.
The main body modification involved moving the rear wheel opening 1/8 in to match the chassis length. That was the norm on these cars as GM A bodies had to be stretched form 112 to 115 inches for racing purpose.
Wheel openings were also flared. The rear bumper was narrowed by about 1/8 in. Scratch built chin spoiler, deck spoiler, rear glass straps and
windshield clips complete the body mods.
All finishes have been brush painted. Vallejo primers and color coat. The specific color was a mix I designed to achieve the intent color.
Tamiya clear applied and then polished. Future coats before and after decals.
Decals from Powerslide, excellent as usual.

Thank you for looking.

Dang Pierre, That doggone car is spectacular. Good job! _________________ "Many men fish all their lives without knowing it is not the fish they are after." Henry David Thoreau

Looks Awesome, Pierre. Paint, decal work, detailed interior, stance, all excellently done. Need to let people know on the wip that you have posted the final pics. Again, top notch job as always. |

Thank you all for the nice feedback.
I'm still not happy with the photography. The blue background doesn't work and I still can't find neutral gray cardboard. Working on an alternative... _________________ "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it" - Yogi Berra |
