I am starting a clear Earnhardt Monte Carlo build. I built this kit once just box stock while I could not spray paint because I needed to build something rather than just prep LOL

After that build, I wanted to do one where you can see details on the chassis and body better, but keep the ghost effect.. So my plan is:
- Anything that would be chassis color, I will not paint
- Anything body color, I will not paint
- I will paint engine, trans, drivetrain, suspension, cooling and aluminum shrouding.
- For the interior I will do the dash, seat, shifter, and roll bar padding
- On the body I will paint the lower body skirts and fuel filler. still deciding on the spoiler
- Still deciding on clear or painted wheels.

Anyone done a similar build? Would love tips/suggestions!

So have been working on the body getting rid of the hood pins (will use PE) and the mold lines and mold fill points on the inside. Here is where I am. Basically smoothed out and sanded in Tamiya 2000 grit sanding pads. I have sanding fabric up to 12000 grit, then will use Tamiya polish (course, fine, and finish). I did some playing around with the hood first. It turned out ok, but will likely go back over it again.

Hood Before and after:

Body smoothed out:

This is a great project Tim. It is fun to see something different.
May I suggest that after you are done with the polishing steps you might want to apply Future with a soft brush. Body would then look like glass.
Question: if you don't plan to paint the chassis is it because it is also clear plastic?

Thanks Pierre!

I have thought about clearing the body. Either future or Tamiya clear rattle can.

To answer your question, the entire kit is molded in clear. The only thing that is not are the rubber tires.

Got the body done.... 1000 and 2000 grit Tamiya sanding sponges, then 3200, 6000, 8000 sandpaper. Then Tamiya polish 2-4 passes with coarse, 2 with fine and 1 with finish.

Results are pretty good. The clear plastic is more brittle and I need to better adjust my handling. I managed to crack through on the one fender, and a crack somehow at the rear wheelwell. Maybe I will do another body later to eliminate those, but not getting another kit at this point.

I think I am going to do a coat of future inside and out. I am sure that will help it pop a bit.

I'm impressed with what I have seen so far. How much time do you have in polishing at this point.
As for the crack in the fender, a Goodyear decal will cover some of it up. Once you have a frame under it, the crack may not be noticed due to all the other features.

Thank you for the compliments. I am pretty pleased... the mold marks in the back of the trunk still show up a bit, but hard to get back there, and the trunk pins will hide most of it. The hood and roof were the key ones

I have a few hours in the body for sure. I did a lot of sanding on the hood, then polishing to get a feel for how far I could take it. The first photo of the hood was like 1 1/2 hours or so including removing the molded in hood pins.

So to get to this point, I would say 7-8 hours in the body as a guess .boogie

Update...

I have put a couple of ooats of Future on the inside and outside of the body, and starting chassis assembly.

Building box stock, with the only modification being that I built a box to replicate the fuel cell as I don't think it looked good just empty with it being clear all around it.

I am still deciding on decals. Obviously the kit decals are old and risky. Thinking of doing Earnhardt's Daytona 500 scheme. The one thing I do not like about this Monte Carlo is that the molded in lower grill is square where most of the actual cars have curved sides with it being wider at the bottom. I may go with PE grills to remedy that.

Very unique build and you have done wonders with that body! Never saw one of these before.

I can't imagine polishing out that much clear bodywork that well. My hand is cramping up just thinking about it! Beautiful start.

Thanks for the compliments on the body. It came out well, especially after the Future. More than I planned on, but since its still too cold to spray paint, I didn't have much else to do!

Chassis is done. here it is with the body sitting on it. Need to finish details on the body and decals. Still deciding though. I did order PE grills for it, so that will be some work too, but I will feel much better about the end result

I'd thought about one of these but, I'd never get the body to look that great. Looks great. When I thought about it, thought it would cool to paint the chassis and cage up and just have the clear body.

Small piece of sponge, tried to minimize bubbles that way vs. a brush.

That was my disappointment with this kit.
I wish only the body had been done in clear.

You could always paint the chassis if you wanted to do so. Molding it in clear gives the most options for what parts a builder want clear vs. painted.

This is the body with decals and a coat of future over them.

Wow!
This is absolutely the best I've ever seen this kit built. Out of the park!

Couple of finished chassis/body shots. Put a post in the showroom of the finished car.
