LeeRoy won his first super speedway race in the 1966
purple Dodge Charger (1966 National 500). This car was
often the fastest car on the track but not very dependable.
Every color picture I good find showed different shades of
the color purple. The decals are made by "Yesterdays" and
are of exceptional quality. Unfortunately out of print. Thanks
to Brian on this board for providing me with a set.
The body is an original MPC model I've had for years. Used
a Monogram Grand National frame, which had to be lengthened
a quarter inch. PPP tires and rims. Revell hemi engine from
a 67 Plymouth. Scratch built roll cage out of evergreem .062 rod.
Not a particularly good looking Grand National. As I recall
the 12 was semi factory backed.
Jon Thorne was the owner. A "rich kid" from Georgia. Died
young as a result of an auto accident.
Took some effort to get the period correct tires under the
fenders. In fact nothing fit very well on this one. But it turned
out OK in the end. Can see I need to put some silver on the door handles...
Really nice "Yesterdays" decals
I never got to see the 12 race. First and only 66/67
charger I saw run at Daytona was in 1968. Jame Hylton
ran this one. Actually the first Grand National I ever saw on the track at Daytona.
(pole run for 68 Daytona 500).

I think that's a good looking car and you did a real nice job on it.
I've found when looking for pictures of a particular car you end up seeing different shades of color. Can be very frustrating to make a decision on exactly what color it was. |

Excellent build. Thanks for the info on Jon Thorne. Sad, he died so young. I was wondering. Why did you not post this in the Showroom? Just curious. |

Just don’t figure my models are show room quality. Don’t like to wire up the engines (hands just to big & no patience for that detail!!). And I could do better paint jobs if I wanted to drag out the airbrush.
Should have posted this in the DARKSIDE forum, but so used to posting modifies I just wasn’t thinking!!!
In my never ending build of cars that LeeRoy drove, planning the red/silver Bud Moore #16 LeeRoy drove in 1967 before moving on to Junior Johnson.
All these cars are for a friend in Florida that new LeeRoy well. He has a huge and ever-growing collection. He always wanted models of what LeeRoy drove
but just not a model builder…
Did this model more or less as the Charlotte winning car. Not the Daytona version that’s in most of the available pictures. Same car with the only real difference is no side windows at Charlotte. |

It looks showroom quality to me. I guess they should have named it finished builds instead of showroom. I have seen lots of builds posted there that aren't half as nice as yours. |

Great job, Bill! Glad the decals worked out for you. Yesterday's seem to hold up pretty well despite their age, better than many others. I never would have gotten around to building this one, happy they got used! |

Lee Roy’s charger and Hilton Charger both ran out of shops located in Spartanburg SC.

I used “DODGE” from the other set that you included.
I did spray the decals with clear just in case. About
Six seconds in warm water and they applied like they
were just printed. Real quality decals !!!
I checked everywhere for a set of these decals.
Would do the red & white version of the 12 if you
Happen to have another set of the Yesterday’s.
Thanks again… |

From memory (and I may be wrong), the crew chief of the 12 was Bob Johnson. Don’t know anything about him but he must have known his way
Around those monster hemi engines.
Also don’t know for a fact but the 12 appears to be the same red & white
Charger LeeRoy drove for Nichels Engineering (Also numbered 12) before hooking up with Jon Thorne… |

That's a fine looking build Hawk. I agree with Mark, it deserves to be in the showroom.

Very sharp looking build!!!
Paint variations seem to be very common as teams spot painted when there was damage on the cars. They weren't the plastic wrapped show cars of today. |

LeeRoy's Charger was painted '59 Buick Lido Lavender per the man who painted it. LeeRoy wanted it painted the color of Fireball's last race car, they didn't know what color that was so they got as close as they could from looking at paint chips.
