Hi guys,

with a little help from you ...

Fact is that the 68 Petty Roadrunner has a vinyl roof and you can see frame moldings.

Some more cars be seen with black roofs like the 74 Charger of Butch Hartman, but this isnt a vinyl roof - itÂīs painted black.

The others were #30 Dave Marcis Superbird, Don White #3 and Buddy Baker #6. Inside the photo book "Chrysler Stock Car Racing" by Sport Game Inc. are some pictures and i guess that the cars had painted roofs and none vinyl roofs - is that true?

with compliments and stay healthy

None of the cars had vinyl roofs including the Petty car. Dale Inman confirmed this recently on Dale Jr.'s Tv show. It was a paint that looked vinyl but was not.

At 5:33 in the video Inman says this:

I recall reading that Chrysler's NASA involvement led to the discovery of Boundary Layer Air Effect , which Dale Inman referenced in the video link. This was also the reason why Chrysler raised the hood scoop air inlets a few inches above the hood on the Dodge Challenger.

Thanks for that info. I've seen the picture of Richard beating on the roof, but never figured how that was going to fix a loose vinyl roof.

what a sit down it would be if you got Junior Johnson, Hoss Ellington and Smokey Yunick to talk about the Gray areas that they just stomped on.

A good read is the book Declarations of Stock Car Independents by Perry Allen Wood. The chapter on Joe Frasson is quite interesting, including Joe seeing fuel leaking out the bottom of the REAR quarterpanels of the Harry Hyde - wrenched K & K Dodge on pit road. Laughing
For all his antics, Smokey Yunick stated several times in his trilogy of books that " big motors & big gas tanks " were flat - out cheating. Of course Smokey did NOT consider " A 2 inch diameter fuel line 20 feet long " to be cheating !!! Laughing
