A friend of mine is painting a full size 64 Merc in the Stroppe colors and the question is, what is the red color I can't find it and I think it is Poppy red. No guess's please, just the answer. Thanks

1957 Mercury Persimmon, actually an orange in sunlight. The blue is 1957 Mercury Pacific Blue Poly. There were different mixes of the blue so year make is important.

I thought the Poppy Red and Guardsman Blue looked better to me. This is a model of the restored (replica) that is running in the historic races.

I seem to recall doing some research and varifying that the Mercury colors were exactly the same as Ford Poppy Red and Guardsman Blue,

Great looking Merc Len!

Sox & Martin loved this paint scheme so much on their Stroppe Comet, they continued using it on their Mopars.

Poppy Red and Guardsman Blue didn't exist in '63 though, when Stroppe returned with the Mercury factory team. In fact, I don't think Poppy Red existed as a factory color until the spring of '64 when the Mustang was introduced. Maybe not even then, the color chip charts don't list it as such. It's much more likely that the color was 1956 Persimmon:

It is Persimmon. It is a bit more orange than Poppy Red which as Tom pointed out wasn't available until the 1964 Mustang. As for the blue, I can't remember off hand what it was.

Stroppe tended to use '56 colors since that was the year he was hired by Mercury originally. Based on that, the blue would have almost certainly been Delta Blue Poly.
