I am working on a 56 dodge stock car and after seeing this pic I was wondering if anyone knew the history of 4 tailpipes out the trunk. seems like I have seen the same set-up on his Chrysler's.
wondering if they just branched out to two pipes on each bank after they went over the rear end housing. is it possible that the ran 4 pipes all the way from the exhaust manifolds?
looking for some clarity.
thanks
paul

Perhaps something taken from the marine industry? Maybe Bobby Allison knows?

I don't see any exhaust carbon buildup on the white paint, suggesting maybe not exhaust outlets. Unless, that's a super clean burning engine. I could be wrong.

fireball, thanks for response. the tips seem to be extended several inches from the trunk, that might be why no darkening. I can't think of any other reason for the pipes but exhaust. my questioning is not so much about being exhaust, more about having 4 and how they were configured.
thanks, paul

I was going to suggest they were decorative elements to look like exhaust ports on a motorboat - buy Mercury motors were outboards...

I remember Buddy Baker saying one time when discussing his early '60s cars, "I wouldn't get up out of an electric chair to get in one of those things now"

The more I study the original pic, it appears to me that both exhaust exit on the left lower body panel, side by side, just below the rear deck lid. Oval shaped tips, and black with exhaust deposits. Interesting, the weight of the exhaust dumps, are left, and low, yet up out of harms way.

fireball. there are 4 pipes coming out of the panel, 2 on each side. you cannot see the pass side openings as they are cut on a bias.
still wondering about if they are full length from the motor or just split in the trunk.
i have posted some pics of the model in the fab section I am building of this car.
