Don't know much about this early LeeRoy Yarbrough ride.
A flathead NASCAR style sportsman of the type car that ran at
the Jacksonville Speedway from the beginning until the
change over to the lighter more powerfull modified cars.
A bit of a guess on the colors. worked from a b/w picture.
revell 37 Ford.
not a bad match when seen in b/w
a proud LeeRoy standing next to his ride
This was probably the first Red Moore built car of the fenderless type modifies. It was driven by a driver named PeeWee Hornsby, who wrecked this car the first or second time out. Another car (or this one was rebuilt) & LeeRoy Yarbrough took over the driving.
This car was kind of special. Used an Olds Rocket 88 engine.
resin 34 Dodge or Plymouth body.
This was one of the last of the Red Moore built cars. It's 1962, LeeRoy had moved onto NASCAR and his brother Eldon took over driving the 39...
It's Speedweeks 1962, Leeroy was in town and wanted to drive the Jax track. All argreed, Eldon turned over the car to his brother, and it was the Sunday before the Daytona 500.
LeeRoy put this car in the wall (have a picture, fairly minor damage as far as I can tell).
But this is the urban legend...
LeeRoy had just been drafted & was due to report for military service. Not something the wanted for sure. Had a really hot car for the Daytona Permatex 250 the next Saturday, and didn't want to be sidelined from racing for the next two years. The truth or legend is he wrecked the 39 on purpose, got a family doctor to write a letter to the draft board claiming a serious injury, and never had to report for military service. LeeRoy won the Permatex 250
in a Pontiac powered modified 1955 Ford (fact).
model is a resin 32 Ford.

Actually three new ones on this post. Two for LeeRoy & one for Peewee.
Amazing how many cars LeeRoy drove in his early years. Have come across a
#22 photo (a car l do remember) & a #99 (that’s new to me).
He even drove Larry Flynn’s #14 modified for at least one race.
Flynn was well know in the southeast and ran in the 50’s on the Daytona beach course as well as the early years on the Daytona super speedway.
And as early as 1955 at Darlington. |
