Real stupid question to ask, but I've ever only used warm water when applying decals. What seems to be the pros and cons for decal solutions I've seen? I have no experience with them. Thanks

You can have an adverse reaction between the decal setting solution and the decals. I have had decal setting solution actually wrinkle the decals when the solution was to help set the decal. If you are using computer generated decals (ALPS or laser), the ink can run a bit. I use Micro Sol and Micro Set for what its worth.

My advice is to use a decal setting solution only when you have to.

Some solutions will in fact wrinkle a decal. Resist the urge to touch it. Leave it alone and 99% of the time they will flatten. Some setting solutions are stronger than others with the strongest I use Solv-A-Set. I have found the Micro-Sol and Micro-Set to be not as strong. The old kit decals from the Revell-Monogram were tough. I'm not sure anything would hurt those decals. My suggestion is to take a couple of decals and try them on a junk body to get the feel and to gauge if your decals are going to react to the solution.

That's actually a great question, I've never used anything but warm water myself. Since I've been on this board I've learned a lot of new things, and, I've been curious about setting solutions as well, pros and cons to the different products out there. Great answer Jim and Dennis.

I remember a Sgt. Major that regularly impressed up on his men that "the only stupid question is one not asked!"

So just ask! Wink

Walthers here too. It's can get a little vicious with Scale Motorsport Carbon Fiber decals. Gentle touch is a must! Always have used warm tap water too.

micro-set/micro-sol whenever i apply decals and walthers solv-a-set for tough curves and when need to snuggle down into a indent. i will also use it to get rid of silvering. prick the area silvered with a pin or sharp exato or even a slight slash, and appy the solv-a-set let sit a bit then pat lightly to get it under the decal and set.
