So, the other day I was digging around in my stash of kits looking for something to work on when I came across this:
I have no memory of doing this. Obviously it's done with Fred Cady decals so that puts it back in the early '80s. But I really don't remember doing it.
I only have this grainy B&W photo from the Fred Cady reference sheet to go by.
So I start digging around to find the story on this car. Turns out Ranier ran the last four races of the '82 season. unsponsored, with Buddy Baker driving after the J.D. Stacy deal fell apart. I decided it was worth finishing but I didn't want to put a lot of time into it. I whipped up a generic chassis and just shot it all in flat black to deemphasize any lack of detail.
Considering the paint and decals are more than 30 years old it doesn't look too bad.
The white paint has gone "off" a little as you can tell by comparing it to the freshly painted wheels. It doesn't show in the photos but the clear areas of the decals has yellowed slightly too.
Anyway, for a quickie throw together model to fill a hole in the collection it's not too bad. Let me know what y'all think in the comments. _________________ Still crazy after all these years.

Nice Build of a rare car. I recall Ranier Racing only used the Grand Prix body a few times in 1982. Another rare Ranier car, one on my build list, is the Ranier Racing Lemans that Joe Ruttman drove at Riverside In November, 1982. As Buddy Baker's contract with Harry Ranier had run its' course, Ranier hired Ruttman in a one - off run. ( Joe was quite successful at Riverside in Sportsman Events. ) Two things made this LeMans different -- It was a purpose - built Riverside - ONLY car, and it had the HARDEE'S Orange front end paint that would be used in 1983 !!! This car was pictured on a 1983 NASCAR Calendar, but would never be driven by Cale Yarborough; it was instead one of the Lemans sold to Raymond Beadle for Tim Richmond to drive. |
