I’m currently on Gober Sosebee’s Sportsman car that raced on Daytona Beach. My goal is to slightly weather it as raced. I’m having satisfactory results misting silver acrylic craft paint followed by a sand color to get a nice sandblasted effect, but I’m at a loss on the best way to replicate the thin layer of sand on the running boards.

Once I figure out the correct material, I think I’ll be able to brush on some flat acrylic clear and sprinkle it on (pretty much the same technique as flocking), but I’m just struggling to think of what might look right. Any ideas?

If you want to position the car on the compacted sand along the water side, I would think it may not need to be too grainy. The natural surface of plaster-of-paris might work for wet or compacted sand. That's just a thought - I have not done this.

I think he's looking to put sand on the car, not the car on sand.. LOL. These, or similar pigments, should work. I've used them on military stuff. There are lot's of choices to choose from. There is also "Pigment Fixer" which holds the pigments in place.

Yes, I was looking to put sand on the car, though putting the car on sand could be a fun and simple diorama idea. I’ll look into the MiG and embossing powder. Thanks guys!

How about real sand and some hodge podge glue.

I have considered real sand but I’m afraid it will be out of scale. I’ve had good success with real dirt by putting it into a ziploc bag and hitting it with a rubber mallet to make a fine powder before mixing it with acrylic clear to make a paste. Then the toothbrush splatter method.

Maybe I can experiment the same technique with sand? I, just concerned the individual granules will be harder to break up.

Great idea! Poking around the spice cabinet it looks like we have some garlic powder that will be perfect. It’s a little pungent, but maybe sprinkled and sealed with flat clear it won’t be noticeable. Laughing
