I'm working on a Wally Dallenbach, Jr. #46 - Woody Woodpecker. The decals look great on the paper, but 1) they crack super easy and 2) they seem to be stuck to the backing paper. Any suggestions as to what to do? |

Warm, almost hot, water helps, too. I always use distilled water for decalling as it has no minerals or chemicals in it (esp. important if you have municipal water). The Microscale decal Film can hold the decals together but it also thickens them a little. I have also used it as a glue to hold older decals down that have lost their adhesiveness until I could get my clear coat on. If the decals are a little stiff and not wanting to conform, a hair dryer can help with that.

I've tried Testor's Decal Fixative with these (which smells a LOT like their Gloss) So far, it's been hit-or-miss. I did happen to have another sheet (3 sheets, actually). It's plugging along; although I've ruined a few decals where they tore (one wouldn't release from the paper). I hadn't considered the distilled water; I may have to pick up some today.
I appreciate the tips! |

Here's where I am so far. I've used Testors decal fixative and LOTS of MicroSol and MicroSet.
Still need to finish marking and then clean up the residue from the decal solvents. I'll be clearcoating this one for certain. |

Hmm, looks good so far, I never had any issues with decals when I did mine, as a matter of fact I'm pretty sure I had all the decals on in about 2 hours, the hood did give me some fits though. The very warm water does help A LOT though, and I cut all decals first and soaked a couple at a time so they would slide easier. _________________ Would love to have time to finish but I have kids:

Brian, thanks for the tip on using distilled water! City water here is loaded with water softening salt..... _________________ Ed. K |

Thanks!
I think my biggest issue has been the age of the decals. Although, I was surprised. I keep my decals in a closet in the guest room; sealed in a plastic case. This is the first time I've had significant issues. But, that is okay. I got clear on the kit recently; so it's onward and upward! |
