This might be old news but I just found out about this. Petersen Automotive is in the process of digitizing over a million images. Click on the link below and you will see a NASCAR page. I've looked at about 150 pages of almost 600 and I've seen cars I had never seen before. Lots of close ups, under the hood, cockpit photos. The bad news is they all have a Petersen watermark on them. Even at that there is still a lot of detail there for model builders.

Thanks for the posting & link. Lotsa COLOR pics of RIVERSIDE Raceway, mostly of the June, 1978 NAPA 400 k race. The starting line-up included FIVE DODGE Magnums, including Richard Petty in one of his last MOPAR runs. |

Wow, Neil Bonnett with a "Landau" roof! May have had "Fine Corinthian Leather" in that baby too!

1971 Daytona 500 is very interesting. Nice pics of the 305 Daytona, engine out of the bay.
There are many mistakes, regarding the year of the photos, so be careful!! |

Yea -- I noticed that too. The shots of a 1969 Dodge Charger 500 in 1975 ??? I'm thinking NOT - despite what the Dodge teams might have wanted !!! |

Lot of great pictures I have never seen.
But so far only on page six and this
Was a NASCAR era that I spent lots
Of time at tracks with a camera.
To bad Peterson publications had
To "P" on so many of the pictures... |

You can buy pics, then there would be no "P" to worry about! |

They seem to have had a lot of changes at the company that has posted the Petersen Photo Archives. Does anyone know if you can still purchase prints from this site? Thanks, Mike |

Already a Boo - Boo , though an interesting one, in the 1st page of this link. The Olympia Beer Dodge shown is actually the car Hershel McGriff took to The 24 Hours of LeMans in 1976. Clues include a front grille filled with headlights, and the white " Number Dot " ( w/o any number as they were assigned once at the track ) with 2 small lights straddling it. Also, Hershel is on the right, and his son Doug McGriff is the semi - bald driver on the left. |

Been trying to buy some images for months. NO response. I am afraid that most of the people got fired when T.E.N. killed off 19 magazines about a year ago. There may be no one left there to service photo requests. |

I'm in the magazine publishing industry, so I know how that has been going. There may likely be one or two individuals tasked with the archiving. Their latest post on Facebook was March 24...
I wish the SCR magazine images were archived. Being a smaller company, the photographers likely held the rights to the photos. Rich Benyo took many fantastic shots for them and I wish his could be browsed somewhere.
Photo collections could be best donated to educational libraries, who can do a proper job of archiving. A good example is UNC Charlotte which holds the Bryant McMurray collection. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |
