As a Ford fan in the '70s, I respected the brilliant white Bud Moore Torinos, driven by Buddy Baker. As the '76 season approached, I anticipated the mandated change to the notchback coupe, as the fastback Torinos were now too old.
The Torino, from 1972 to 1974 had gone through an awkward transition, from sleek to bulky. It was the Mickey Rourke of cars. However, Bud Moore made the bulky '74-'76 look slick.
The body-in-red here the S&H Torino. Nice but with some subtle inaccuracies. The front is a little to 'square.' the side windows seem a bit small. Not difficult to correct.
I am in the rough beginning stages. Opened up and flaring the front wheel openings, modified the front lower fender surfaces, removed the bumper mountings front and rear, sectioned the bumpers to narrow them, removed bumper guards.

Good start!!!! FYI the 'stock' version is molded in white if you build more of these. |

Yeah - I got this cheap on Ebay, so I know I'll be putting silver spray paint on my Lowe's list.... _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

May I ask what chassis configuration are you planning on using under your build? Thanks for sharing. |

I am going with a Monogram T-bird, which fits well, but will need to lower the dash. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

I have the same kit, cheap from ebay, after watching the movie... lost my taste for the car as is. So I'll be following this one with interest as well. Please feel free to make any of my mistakes for me. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

I was so dyed in the wool in those days I 'modified' a Matador AFX body to a Junie Torino. Just dug this up recently...

I'm right there with you guys!!! That AFX Matador body didn't by any chance start out as a yellow cab, did it? Mine did, and by the time I was done cutting, filing, sanding, and exacto scraping on it, Penske's real race car looked stock compared to my aero Matador. I hear you clucking, and I know where your nest is!!! |

Mine was the racing version (not the Penske scheme). _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

I've primed over the red, so the work on the wheel openings is easier to visualize here. The shot from the rear has poor focus, but you can see the basic shape of the front wheel opening bulge.

What kind of putty do you use for the flares? Does it shrink over time? |

Looks like Tamiya white. I don't believe it shrinks. Nice work so far. The subtle flares look really good. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

Hey Danno. Tamiya White. I finish with a coat of Tamiya Liquid Surface Primer (in the square bottle) which I also use to smooth edges and fill pinholes or small recesses. Haven't had shrinking issues once dried. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Test fitting the narrowed bumpers. As with typical '70s bumpers these get tucked in much deeper than stock. Bud had the rear nearly flush with the trunk valance panel.
As you can see, I still need to add the taillight covers, etc. Still refining the bodywork details... _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Been a year since my last update. Juggling other stuff...anyway, I have spent more time studying photos of the actual race car, and am discovering the magic that Bud Moore had applied to this brick of a car to smooth it out and cheat the wind where possible. Also looking more closely at the accuracy of the Revell body in general. Did some Photoshop work:
This is a nice side view of the Revell S&H body, originally posted somewhere else by someone else. The credit is theirs.
I laid over a 1:1 Torino, to check accuracy to the factory body:
The only two things that stood out are the side window, which is cut a little high, and the nose, which points up just a bit. The lower front fenders, between the bumper and wheel opening should angle down a bit more toward the wheel opening.
Here is the Bud Moore car:
And laid over the Revell:
Some serious droop there.
How could this pass a template check? I studied some shots from the front.
Note how the arc of the back edge of the hood- at the windshield -drops at the left and right. (I added the horizontal guidelines). This keeps the center line of the hood at a higher level, and the sides drop to follow the drop of the fenders.
Compare to a S&H movie Torino:
This rear angle betrays the body massaging done on those front fenders. The top top creases of the fenders disappear beyond the A-pillar:
Time to once again get out the hobby saw, emory boards and putty... _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Excellent seminar so far; the body overlays are great! Worth noting that during this time period the Chevrolet Laguna S-3 was by far the slickest car body allowed by NASCAR, putting the Mopar & Fomoco teams ( except maybe The Wood Brothers ) behind in Superspeedway Areo. I'm guessing that NASCAR, in their never - ending efforts to keep the competition equal, turned a blind eye to some of the body massaging efforts. Photos I have show Cup & West Series cars going through Tech Inspection at Riverside. Richard Petty's # 43 Buick had a gap in the front of the full body template that one could fit their hand under !!! |

So I sawed along the front edge of the door, starting at the bottom and working about 3/4 the way up. Then rejoined at the bottom, to droop the front just a bit. Then warmed the front and gave it just a bit of bend at the wheel arch. The front fascia was made right to the road by sawing the seam at the headlamp caps, and bending the fascia back up and perpendicular to the road.
Sanded a bit off the fender top creases - this is more like it.
Fenders flared.

I'm Following this one! I wondered how that GTorino body was from the kit, and looks like you modified about 60 percent of it to get it into racing shape!
Look forward to more updates, Bill, this one should look cool. |

Thanks. Bud Moore really slicked up the Torino body more than other racers I have noticed. I am working on a '72 RC Cola car as well, and there was some work up front on that one too. _________________ Bill Jobson is my real name. |

Finally got it painted (with brush!) Tamiya white. The car I am doing required some extra decal creation, so I did them in Adobe Illustrator and printed inkjet on Sunnyscopa clear decal film. Will add the LoboGraphix elements and contigencies.
