I just noticed this thread right now...

One thing I need more of is the STP in the blue square...That decal was used forever and almost no sheets have them on there. I've used all I had and now I'm going to have to paint the blue box and use the regular round STP decal that I have plenty of. I havn't tried that yet so I don't know how it will work.

But, dang, every decal on here I would like.

Add me in agreement in the decals that are on every car but the sheets only provide two of usually.

About the only decals I'm set on are the NASCAR logos, because when Paul had his sheet out, I bought ten copies. I figure I will run out of them in about a decade, maybe sooner if I didn't slack so much.

I'm like Paul in that to me, contingincys are vital to the project...but I don't know near as much as he does or have as cool a collection :)

The STP in the blue square was STP Gas Treatment, it started showing up in the very late '60's or early '70's IIRC. You're right, they don't show up in many sheets because with the exception of the recent sheets for the Chevelles and Paul's '70's sheets there haven't been many good sheets issued for that era. I hope that changes soon, with the upcoming new kit reissues.

I included that STP sticker on the decal sheet I did for the Model King Torino. Look down at the right hand corner.

The blue rectangle is actually STP Oil Filter and in 1971 it was STP Radiator Treatment. This is the Oil Filter decal.

This is the most common though. The Radiator Treatment version had the lettering in the same place as the oil filter version.

PS Gerald, don't forget that for Darkside-Grayside cars the STP Oil Treatment shouldn't have the dark outline, that didn't show up until mid 1985.

As I see it, contingencies will always be a "problem". :D

Even the same company varied oftentimes on their decals. I know of at least three different Micro Precision, and several Good Year. Regal Ride changed a few times, along with Gabriel, and the NASCAR logo changed I don't know how many times.

There were certain decals that were on just about every car each specific year. So we then get into "year specific" decals.

Just how do we deal with this???

I think the reason we Dark Siders are so picky about contingencies is that the contingencies were so varied in that era. NASCAR didn't control what was used nor where it had to go, and the amount and placement varied significantly from race to race even on the same car. It's as much a signature for a race as a special paint scheme is in modern NA$CAR. Most of the recent sheets for Dark Side cars do contingencies very well, the Yesterday's Bobby Allison Coke Chevy/Cyclone sheet and Red Farmer sheets are both particularly well-rendered and complete for the early '70's. I don't know who William's artist was for those sheets but he or she deserves our kadoos (with apologies to everyone but Jeff Hammond, LOL!). I spend a lot of time researching contingencies, typically I will spend six to ten times as many hours creating contingencies for a new piece of decal artwork than I spend doing the numbers and main sponsor logos, doing contingencies correctly is a very tedious process to research and create them properly and within the constraints of the screen printing process.

I try to make every sheet I create one that is worth purchasing for the contingencies alone, the subject matter is that important to a Dark Side or Gray Side build. I appreciate the advice, assistance, and critique from all the board members here, you ladies and gentlemen are a big part of the reason we have the best collection of vintage NASCAR kits and decals EVER! Who would have thought that we could drop a $20 bill on a current-issue model kit and build a model of Dean Dalton's or Ritchie Panch's or Dick Brooks's or Wendell Scott's rides from the early '70's? Or with a few dollars more in aftermarket parts and/or decals on top of that, do Henley Gray's Thunderbird or any one of several James Hylton or Benny Parsons cars? And that's not even getting into the decals that haven't been announced yet but that are in the pipeline!

Good times, my friends. Enjoy them while we have them, and please support the aftermarket and fringe market (like The ModelKing, without whom these kits would never have happened) so that we can continue to enjoy this kind of quality, selection, and availability.

Well said Tom, if there is anyone out there who doesn't appreciate your efforts shame on them. I for one am most thankful for them, and appreciate all that you do.

I know doing contingencies is a time consuming task, and I too echo your sentiments on the others in the hobby, such as William, and the Model King. Whom without his kits we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

My hat is off to all of you that make the decals,resin bodies and parts,and able to get the model companies to re-make old kits like Dave Burkett did.I think this is really the golden age of modelling. To coin a phrase,"the futures so bright...i gotta wear shades"

Fordfan called it right, this is the golden age of modelling. I started doing resin parts and then bodies back in '89 because annual kits were getting expensive and in some cases hard to find. No ebay, just swap meets a few times a year. JNJ, Don Holthaus, & Fred Cady were about it back then. Like Luke & his brother, if you wanted to build other than Richard Petty cars or the ones from MPC you needed to practice hand-writing with sign painters paint. Most of the bodies I offered in resin have been re-released by the industry. We can all build a wider variety of cars more accurate than ever before. And easier too! It's nice not being the only one showing this era of cars at Toledo any more. Thanks to this site I'm enjoying model building like never before. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!
